Beginning to think its going to be something like this as most of the above has already been checked or changed, won't hurt to change them anyway and hopefully and nice cheap fix. MOT in the morning so as long as there's no surprises there I will sort this out and it's happy camping time
I think it's ok if you don't blow your budget on the van and expect there to be no maintenance cost, if you can't do it yourself you have to budget for garage costs. I knew nothing about engines 2 years ago when I bought my van and now I know a few basics, the easy option would be to get it straight in the garage and let someone else deal with it but the point of posting the query is to gain a bit more knowledge from you guys and crack it myself or have a better idea next time. I've had 2 engine problems while away in the van and managed to fix both at the roadside, basic stuff for experience people but for a mechanical numpty like me it gives a warm glow that only flaming sambuca's can normally It's partly what owning the van is about for me, out of my comfort zone mechanically but there's something exciting about not knowing if you're going to make it home, help, I'm turning into a sadist......
Pod really proud of you that is the best way to have a go! My first ever thing I had to do on a car was change the holy exhaust on my first car ( Beetle naturally) took me all day but I managed it! Now 27 years later I do my own welding, spraying mechanics, trimming etc . No expert but I am prepared to give it a go and have confidence enough to drive 65miles each way to work daily in the 40 year old junker! Stick with it mate you have the right attitude. Good luck with the van and get those hands dirty. ;-)

Hehe! Well done stick with it and inspite of the noise, slow speed, condensation occasional smell of hot oil and petrol, pants visibility in the rain with poor lighting , not forgetting draughts and sod all heat you still love the damn thing! Now who's the sadist?!!! ;-)
