Planning trip to VW meseum

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Sydney1, Oct 11, 2012.

  1. Hi all

We are thinking of taking a trip to the birth place of our bus and take in the VW museum next summer. Has anyone else done this trip and have any recommendations of places to stay and other things to do? Had thought about going to the Black Forest until we realised it was the other end of the country but any suggestions of more local national parks or possibly the coast etc would be great. Thinking of going for about 7-10 days

    Cheers

  2. Were thinking of going next year as well so will be watching this ;)

  3. I've been. Went a couple of years ago. There are 2 places to go - the main Wolfsburg factory site, which has the whole visitor centre and vehicle displays shizzle, and then there's the Stiftzung VW Automuseum which is a couple of kilometers away from the factory site.

There is quite a bit to do at the visitor centre, there's a big museum containing not only VWs bit all sorts of cars called the Zeithaus, there's a 4x4 track (I had a go on a Amarok doublecab, it was fun) and there's a display building for every marque in the VW family, and then there's the towers which contain the new cars waiting for customers to pick them up. There's also a factory tour, which takes you along the Golf assembly lines - I'd recommend doing that too.

THe Automuseum has loads of cars in it, and although it's essentailly just one big room with a load of cars in, you can spend hours going round it. From what I've gathered, they do change the cars around a bit so different ones might be on display - I think the main ones stay there all the time, they just swap around some oft he more obscure ones. They've got a load of concept cars and one offs and stuff like that.

We went in February, but that was just because it was my birthday present :) We stayed in a hotel in Hannover and drove over to Wolfsburg on a couple of days.

  4. I echo everything that baybirmingham said...

I went about 5/6 years ago now... Had an absolutely awesome time there... but I cheated a little and stayed at a hotel opposite the autostadt, so I just used public transport and me two legs to get about!!

  5. ive been twice..once in 92 and again 2010...camp site i stayed at is next to the football stadium a short drive (5 mins) to all you wanna see and a good base, berlins not that far away the other side of hannover commercial vehicle assembly place, you are also not too far from the westfalia region, sadly the westfalia museum is no longer but i happened to go in 92. you can see and do loads on the way via holland...holland is great in the south west

i was in germany earlier in the year , i had internet access and saw some youtube video of a vw museum in wolfsburg , i searched my sat nav an found what i thought was the same museum ----WRONG ---- there are apparently 2 museums in wolfsburg, the one i found was the one mentioned above, very good but only one camper and a beetle, on a huge site , also on site is the twin towers featured on the "how do they do that" programme where you see people pick up their new vw from the twin towers ,
there is a second museum close by that is mainly bugs and campers , that is one i found on youtube and wanted to go to
dont be an idiot like me and choose the wrong

when i ge a chance i will find the brochure for the address and put it up OR do a youtube search for vw museum to see some good footage of both museums

    hi babybirmingham

must admit i rushed around as i was on my way to prague , but i only saw one camper and a beetle, i did ask the staff about other campers but they did say they only had the one, i told them about the youtube video , it was then they told me about the other museum, i am not knocking the one i went to , well worth the 12 euros to get in , plus the display of the Bugatti veyron is out of this world, like an optical illusion and worth the money alone , but i do not remember seeing more than one van, and as i remember a gold rhinestone encrusted beetle

babybirmingham - there may be some confusion over the museum we are onabout , i went to autistadt gmbe,stadtbuckle,38220 wolfsburg, germany www.autostadt.de

looking at your pics i think you went where I intended to go -- stiftung automuseum volkswagen , dieselstrat 35 , 38446 wolfsburg www.volkswagen-automuseum.de

They are very close to each other and clearly very different the staff said it was either 3 minuts in a car or 15 mins walk away

great pics , the veyron is just an unbelievable sight , your jogging my memory now , but the glass cage had a ferrari in it when i went

suffice to say there are 2 museums and probably 2 great days out for enthusiasts, or you would be able to cram them both in for an exhausting day
