Petrol Leak on carb

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by volkswombat, Nov 16, 2013.

  1. ive taken it off and had a look, everythinh looks fine apart from the float needle valve. it was stuck so ive freed it off. should the needle valve have a spring in it or does it rely on gravity for the needle to drop back down?

  2. Can't remember, but whatever it should operate easily. Blow lightly down the fuel pipe in the carb top: pressing the float valve shaft gently should seal the valve. Take your finger off and it should let air through again.

Probably best to replace its only about £4 and hard to tell if its leaking - even if you blow on it.

  4. the blow test revealed it to be fine. all put together again now and carb bolted on, but didnt have time to finish it all off andsee if it cured my problem. maybe tomorrow....thanks for helps so far xxx

  5. Original genuine solex ones dont have a spring but aftermarket ones have a spring and little ball bearing

    Had your oil level risen?

  6. not noticeably, although my jalopy is relaxing at a jaunty angle so its probably not showing the correct level anyway

  7. Pull your dipstick and give it a sniff
If you can smell petrol then you will need to do an oil change before running the engine

at the very least sit in the drivers seat and make the broom broom sound, you will have to leave the door ajar as a semi skilled person fitted it last time ;)

  11. What was that, a person with a semi fitted it last time? Ding dong

  13. It wasent a joke when i said check the dipstick for a smell of fuel
If the float valve has been stuck open fuel will gravity feed from the tank and pour down the carb throat
This will then make its way through the inlet manifold and over time seep past the valves if the have a slightly poor seal
After that its on its way past the piston rings and on its way to the sump
Oil thinned with fuel isnt any good at lubricating bearings

    Nice easy fix then.

Did you take top of carb off then?

Did you fix or replace float valve?

  20. ended up taking carb off, as with only the top off i couldnt really see enoughand as it was my first time taking a carb to bits i wanted to have a good view of what i was doing! just freed the valve off but if it happens again ill replace it.
