Petrol Leak on carb

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by volkswombat, Nov 16, 2013.

  1. Yep I have it as you described

  2. Is your fuel cut of solonoid working?
Its the cylidrical object on the left hand side of the carb
With the ignition turned on remove the wire going to it then touch the spade connector back onto it
If you hear a click then its working if no click then its staying closed

  3. Yep this is working atat

  4. After you have been cranking it over, remove the carb drain plug on L/H side of carb, 13 mm spanner fuel should drian from float chamber. This will confirm the fuel is reaching the carb

  5. Are you thinking there might be a blockage?
Don't know if this is even possible, I'm a carb numpty, but if there was a blockage - maybe the float chamber @snotty mentioned- then would the carb spit the fuel out the top ?

  6. If it only fires up when you pour petrol in the carb then yes, fuel starvation. Fuel pump u/s , sticking float valve, blocked jets.?

  7. What should happen is that fuel fills the float chamber raising the float which activates the float valve and stops extra fuel entering the chamber, like a toilet cistern. If there's a fault with the valve or float or crap blocking the valve the extra fuel overflows into the carb choke
and drips past the bushes if they are worn.

  8. excellent explanation, thanks. also i wondered if i had connnected the throttlecable up too tightly, would that cause flooding/leakage? just something else for me to check....

  9. Have you fitted a new fuel filter? If so is it the right way round?
    :)

  10. yes and yes.

Take the fuel pipe off the carb, is there fuel there?
If yes you probably got a carb issue
If no fuel pull the inlet pipe off the fuel pump, if no fuel there you have a blockage in the lines
If there is fuel possible faulty pump
It will take a little while for a totally dry fuel system to prime, try to keep the revs up, don't worry about the leak for the time being sort out the fuel starvation issue first
And yes pouring fuel into the top of the carb will cause fuel to leak from the throttle spindle

  12. finally got out for a looksee. i wedged the ign key round so i t was turning over, then i could go watch the engine to see whats going on. fuel is defo getting to the carb, but the carb throat its filling up, the fuel is spitting over the top so thats the cause of my drip/apparent leak. i didnt pour any into carb btw, just cranked it over. so this will be the float valve/chamber or a blockage? will remove carb but been monsooned off!

  13. Your float valve is staying open
Its either faulty or its got some muck stuck in it stopping it closing

Has your oil level risen and does the dipstick smell of fuel?

Float is stuck sausage fingers, try giving the top of the carb a tap wit somink, sometimes disslodges the cause of stickage, if not carb off and pull the top of :D

I'd have thought if valve is sticking open, fuel would at least get in the main jet and engine start.

Remember when the engine is off no fuel is being pumped.

My mate had this problem and engine started fine but when the engine had been running for a while and then switched off excess fuel would go in carb, flood engine and make it a bugger to start.

The fact that yours starts when you drip a bit of fuel down the top of the carb indicates its not getting any fuel.

I doubt that is down to that valve in the fuel chamber. Also you should be able to change that valve without taking the carb off. You just need to take the top of the carb off.

  16. cheers doods, hopefully get back out to perform surgery this arvo if the kiddies behave.....

  17. my book says if you remove carb top, the gasket is reusable. what about gasket for carb to manifold, is that reusable if im careful with it?

Just take the top off to start.

  19. What Razzy said:thumbsup:

    Unclip the throttle return spring
Remove the 5 flat head screw on the top
Lift the top of the carb with fuel pipe still connected then unscrew the float valve

  20. If you're careful, you can reuse both gaskets.
