Painting wheels

  1. Have a small snag from the powder coating. They can't keep the black centres like I want due to the two stage colours I'm having. So, do I do them orange all over, or can i paint the centres? I though I could rattle can and clear lacquer over the top, is this any good for wheels though?

  2. I was thinking about re-doing the wheels on my golf orange and black

Those ronals are gonna be a git to mask up!!

But that said, you can get the whole rim done in black, then wet sand the pieces that you want orange with some 800 grit mask the wheels up, and 2 pack the orange on!! :)

  3. A touch of holographic flake in the orange would look the dogs danglies

  4. The spokes and rims are going to be all orange. It's just the centre piece I want to keep black as it will set off my new centre caps nicely. I know its a bit like sticking a gti badge on a 1.1 golf but I like them. :) [IMG]

Its a 2 stage powder I'm having though, so it gets the orange with the flake over. The issue they've come back with is both the thickness of the coats allied with the sharp edges. If they get the mask even the tiny bit out it will be a mess and he can't guarantee that he will be able to build up the layers equally. Any open edges and the powder will damage really quickly. So he said to do the entire wheel them paint the centres but he doesn't do paint and couldn't advise what to do. I thought rattle can them black then stick a load of lacquer over?

It's really hard to capture an image and get a good representation of how it looks but its awesome in the light. It's to match the engine (which I haven't built yet)

  5. If its only the centres you want black
Then id get the powdercoater to mask them after blasting so they are bare alloy after the powder coating
Then mask the rest once back home
A can of upol acid etch primer over the bare steel then a can of wilkos satin black enamel or gloss black enamel over that once dry

The thing about enamel paint is its harder than the acrylic from a spray can and needs no laquer
Dont paint the bottom of the bolt holes

    I like the centre caps:thumbsup:

  6. The issue is with the masking part. It would leave a hard edge on the edge of the wheel centre, it would end up flaking. The coating will be around 2mm +

  7. Will that paint straight over the powdercoat?

    Not
No hard enge if you soft mask the edge ;)

  9. It would if you keyed the powdercoat with 240 grit

Enamel paint will go over allmost anything but the adhesion over time will suffer if it doesent have a well keyed surface to grip to

If you look at my resto thread all the parts ive painted at home have been painted in tractor enamel

  10. I've requested they do that before and it's failed and ended up a right mess!

Cheers, I'll try it. I've only paid £60 a wheel, what can go wrong?!?
