Painting over Rustoleum

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by dave j, Feb 17, 2014.

  1. My camper is roller painted with Rustoleum at present. I am now looking at the next stage of paintwork and would like to spray it. I am thinking about 2 pack paint but have also considered Cellulose. I know when I have tried to use rattle cans before it has reacted with the Rustoleum so will Rustoleum react with anything I try to paint over it with? Is it best to strip off all the paint before I paint it again?
    Thanks

  2. I'd imagine it would react, esp with anything with a solvent in. Maybe spray on a passivating primer?

You could try a high solids blocker, and there are water based paints that don't have solvents in them (I guess, never used them).

I'd be wary of painting over hand painted paint....the overall thickness will give you something that will chip easily and might craze.

Sods law says you'll get a good finish all the way to the last panel...if you can I think I'd take the rustoleum off.

  4. ^^ whs^^

  5. Shame, but I believe you're going to have to strip it back... acrylic will go over the top but won't bond well

  6. I've always thought it would react, but I believe @Majorhangover has painted over rustoleum with no reaction.

  7. We painted 2k over a van that had been rustoleumed and it pickled up, it still pickled up when it had been striped back to the original paint in some places. I'd try a couple of coats of Barcoat first.

  8. Problem of it is, rustoleum is an oil based paint, any rattle can or 2k paint is solvent based, so whatever you do it's going to get into the oils in the rustoleum and make it react!!

  9. I assume the same would be true for enamel paints. Ive done my interior floor with enamel but left the step to be painted in celly or 2 pak or whatever as I was unsure. Would I be in the same position should I need to overpaint (ie should I avoid the temptetion of using it on my sills etc?)

  10. Yep, enamel is the same :)

  11. Rustoleum is, I believe, enamel.

  12. I see! Ta.

  13. It is... rustoleum is a marketing brand name

  14. A sythetic enamel marketed under several brandnames...I've bought it in the past under the Tekaloid label (useless information :D)
Acrylic will go over it but peels off like a dry skin. Definately a case of a barrier coat first.

  15. Thanks for the repies guys, I think I am going to have to strip it all off then and see how that goes! It seems to come off far to easily hence why I want another paint. Some of the paint on the front panel came off after driving in very heavy rain(!) so I recokon my pressure washer will get most of it off! I need to spend more time prepping too as the side panels arent straight enough.

  16. It will need stripping right off as even barcoat doesent like going over enamel
Your lucky that its coming off so easy as when the prep work has been done well enamel sticks like poo to a blanket

Heat gun and a razor scraper is the best way to tackle large flat areas of it
