On refelction....

  1. ....I should have stood up with more care !
Because when I did stand up I managed to knock the drivers door mirror with my back and the stupid thing fell off :( So having stripped the door to get the nut from the bottom of the door (those of you that don't know would have done the same, and those that did know are now laughing because the nut is captive in the door and you do not need to strip the door panel), I now find that the threaded stem on the bracket is so short it could only have been hanging on by 1/2 a thread ! I'm guessing this is a replacement part because it is nice and shiny but clearly is not right to spec  . So now I need either an original bracket or I need to find a wafer thin plastic washer (did see a tip on here somewhere last night about making one from a plastic bottle which seems a good idea).

Anyone else have problems and fixed it ?

Rant over, thanks for listening

  2. Yeah the modern repros have a shorter threaded stem

I'll bet he's still got bits at his that need painting. And if he hasn't then I'll send him some of mine. ;)

  6. It's funny you should say that dude. I did the same to mine and bought a new repro from euro parts on eBay and it was a couple of mm longer. Was a great mirror and was only a tender.

Hoping I'm not stating the obvious but have you fully wound out the outer chrome locking nut to expose as much thread as poss before winding the mirror on?

  9. Starryboy thanks for the link.
Flakey yeah I did but I will probably have another go as it is useless to me at the moment. Just seems odd to me that it would be so short, it's not like they were saving any money.

Here's the problem with them - even the shiney stainless ones :
On the OG ones, the unthreaded part "outside" the locking nut is a smaller diameter than the thread, so you can loosen the locking nut right back exposing lots of thread. The ones available now have the thread cut just the same length, but the part of the fitting on the outside is thicker (same diameter as the thread was cut into) so the nuts won't back off. Most of the time you can still fit them with a few threads, but often not. It's a bummer. If you're tooled up you can remove the locking nut and drill a few theads out on the outer side of the nut so it'll back off a bit more and save youself the hassle of sending them back only to get replacements exactly the same...

  11. Taking zed s lead, I took the mirror bracket into work and the guys in the toolroom drilled out a few threads which will allow the locking nut to screw out further. Will try fitting mirror over weekend. Here's a pic showing threads stripped back. Black pen mark is the additional distance gained.
