iam looking for some old knackered trailing arms. I want to have a go at flipping the ball joints for drop spindles so would like some to practise with I've got machining equipment to do it and have always wanted to give it go to see if I can. I will put a thread up about it when and if I give it a go cheers for any help.
I don't think the ball joints are custom made, at a guess I would say there is a groove machined into the joint and arm to hold the joint in place upside down, im not brave enough to buy a set to chop up though, I think the welded ones are a better solution in the end
yes they have a groove machined in them and use heavy duty ball joints I have a mill that I could do this with. but there is something else ive got in mind with a use of some other ball joints. I just really want to have a play see what I could do at the moment.
They are not your normal joint with a snap ring groove machined into them , there is a lot of work involved in the spindles reversing the tapers and the like ,
I know there is a lot of work involved ive got all the gear to do it, and iam not going the transporterhaus route ive got something else in mind. iam not going to be doing this with a grinder and blue tack, there will be a lot of machining involved and if they ever got to stage of fitting I wouldn't use these without having the ball joints tested to see whet pressure they fail at.
The reverse tapers are the easy bit, having had a good look over a few sets and how the balljoints fit, I would expect rings and grooves, transporter hause offer to machine out the old ones if they need replacement suggesting removal is not a reversal of fitting, hence my snap ring assumption. Will be interesting to what other ideas there are for the process, I wonder how difficult/ costly having lowered versions forged would be
TH use snap ring and also use ball joints that are designed to work upside down. I'm not sure the std bay ones would be up to that, but upside down joints and common enough so it shouldn't be too difficult to find some suitable. Looking forward to seeing what you're up to Dickie12. If you could find a way of doing this so it's not so bloomin low you'd be onto a winner.
how much for postage on 4 arms. I normally use parcel2go website and use the hermes service as they can be dropped off at local news agents so no waiting for couriers or queuing in the post office
