installed new alternator ( charging ok) start engine and the oil and gen light go out but the oil and gen light stay illuminated when the ignition is turned off any ideas anyone please
wired up spade connector to dash large red wire to the battery via the nut and screw connection used the same wires that were on the old alti and the oil pressure light wire is the same
Why were you fiddling at the dash end? Must be something you did this end I think. Maybe a freaky coincidence and your ignition switch is foobarred?
Just try unplugging the spade connector on the alt... if both lights go out, then the alt has a faulty regulator unit!!
zed your prognosis was right its the ignition switch just been for a drive and noticed when i turned the ignition off the fuel gauge was still working
I was just thinking if that was the case you shouldn't be able to stop the engine? I think you should look at Paul's suggestion, seems there's a lot of dodgy diode encrusted Chinese Faulternaters on the market... Bearings are sounding rough on mine, I hope it's a bosch so it's worth having reconditioned, but expect it's a throwaway one.
have now tried pauls suggestion about the alti wire the alti light goes out and the oil light stays on
wire short in loom in engine bay? Both the wires come from here and somehow they have become permanently live, but there shouldn't be any perm live wires here except the big red alt one. What's the loom like? A sticky mess of insulation tape? I often see vans that have had shorted melted wires repaired with electrical tape (and worse).
you'll read 12v on the oil and alt wires... it's how the system works What year is your van? If it's a later than 76, the ignition switch is modular, so you can just pull a plug off the back of it, therefore disconnecting the ignition switch
all sorted now thanks started to check the wiring from from back to the front arrived at the dash pod and found the fault cheers to all
