Oh dear bad news.....

  1. After having checked and replacing most bits on my engine to try and get it running better i gave her up for a compression test on Friday. :-(

They stopped after checking 2 cylinders. One was only 7 bar but seemed to be leaking and the other was 6 bar but holding.

Looks like I'm gonna have to get it sorted during the winter months.

    More expense lol

  2. Doesn't seem that low to me but leakdown doesn't bode well.

  3. Yeh. Dont get me wrong ive done 3k miles this year and its still usable but needs a few revs to get rolling. Once rolling its fine.

  4. Can anyone guide on how much an engine rebuild would cost?

Am I better laying mine up for the winter and getting it done or buying one from a reputable source and trading mine in px?

  5. depends on the engine mate, but my 1600 came in at around £1700 but that was a lot of new parts that I prob could have reused ie coil, barrels and pistons etc but wanted replaced to make it 100%, plus the cost of a new clutch etc

  6. The low compression and leakage could be down to poorly seating valves or poorly seating barrels
It could also be down to worn piston rings and cylinder walls

Whats the history of your engine?

  7. Not sure paradox. It came from Greece in 2012. Looked poorly maintained when I got it. Just can't tell.

I'm thinking that the bus is with me for life so might as well go for the full monty and hopefully it will serve me well for many years to come. If the engine has to come out for the top end work. It can't be a huge amount more to do bottom end and get a good all over lump.

  8. Id always say with an unknown engine to split the case for inspection at least
Just rebuilding the top end will put more pressure on an allready tired bottom end

    What engine is it dude?

  9. 1600 tp mate.

  10. Id go with an engine builder who will strip inspect and rebuild your engine rather than one who exchanges of the shelf

Laurie petit is doing my engine rebuild and paul weedings another who gives you your own engine back

  11. Yeh I guess the exchange is better for those who need a quick swap over. I'm not in any rush so will prob go down that route! Looks like ill have to put my new bike on hold for a bit then lol

  12. If you're staying type 1, then I've been looking at doing something a bit different with a 74 or 78mm crank, stock 1600 barrels and stroker pistons... gives you 1699cc or 1791cc respectively...

You can keep the heads reasonably stock, but some off the shelf heads with 40x36 valves would be the way to go!!

Will be a cruiser with loads of torque

  13. Sounds funky Paul. What's the £££ for one of them? PM If you like!

  14. I'll have to have a work out dude :)

  15. Nice one dude. Will be very interested. You can make use of my engine as a base.

  16. It's not the #£'s it's the #days you should be thinking about!

  17. Watch it cheeky :p

  18. It all depends on the state of the base components... plus I'd mainly only be re-using the case :)

  19. Ok plan from scratch then paul. I can always flog this as a cheap runner. If you want my mobile so we can discuss then let me know.

  20. Engine rebuild is now booked. Gonna have the full monty. Bottom and top end and anything else needed on the way.

Whilst the engine is out I'm gonna have the battery tray replaced the give the engine bay a good scrub out and a nice coat of tractor enamel. Gonna look lush.
