  1. 2 litre type 4, oil cooler was leaking but no idea why No3 is discoloured like this!
you are looking through the tin where the flaps are .

  2. Might just be a crappy quality cap. Or are talking about the cylinder?

  3. Nah theres gooey oil on the plug cap and at the cylinder base. could be oil being blown around from the leaky cooler but its missing the cap on no 4.

  4. could be because that's where the air slows down... But you have also got like 40 years worth of crap in there too

  5. Happy with the first bit but engines only been in there for about 6 or 7 years!

  6. not so good then... why was the oil cooler leaking? perforated, or kippered seals?

  7. seals were rock hard (but not split. They were black ones. Replaced em with some blue ones I got from Stateside. Seemed quite soft though so didnt get too carried away tightening them.

The oil cooler tightens down hard onto the fitting. The torque setting is to prevent you crushing the oil cooler itself.

Looks like (maybe) the barrel/case join leaking, but they usually dribble out the bottom half. Maybe leaked, blown about oil burnt off elsewhere and perversely this pot has been running cool? Whatever the reason. I'd recommend you clear that gunk out, but you know that. Was the fan housing very oily inside?
If you're going for a spruce up, maybe you should replace ALL the seals so both ends of the crank, the dipstick bellow thing, the push-rod tubes and re-seal the barrels/case.

  9. Agreed Zed. will chuck it back together for now so I can use at a pinch and get all the stuff together I need for a major spruce up, clean, pushrod seals, seals tinware etc and probably fit my dells. Found a few other dodgy bits whilst doing it - thermostat cable - nowt major, convinced myself there was a crack in the case at one point (paranoia).

No clutch slip but the gearbox is wet as well so need a look at that too.

Dipstick bellows is absolutely solid - ie its gone like a hard plastic. Got a decent 2nd hand one that will do for now

  10. torque setting is 5ftlbs accorrding to bentley.. that sound right?

Yep - not a lot is it? My torque wrench is guessing at such low values. Tighten until you get the cooler hard on the stand them nip 'em up so they won't rattle off.

  12. ta zed. went back out and gave em an extra nip. nearly all back together now. will have a mad hour and get finished.

  13. Resurecting this as ive not got to the bottom of this yet. No 3 plug cap has oil on it on the side in line with the airflow. No oil on no 4 plug cap. I did the cooler seals an happy they arent leaking. Top of the engine has a film of oil.

I know I need to be methodical but where to start. PRTs are good - rocker covers are fine oil cooler and seals should be fine (ok as far as i can see). Suggestions?

  14. I dont know where the picture went to but it showed no 3 cylinder looking through the gap where the oil cooler is and theres crud on the fins of no3 - top nearest no4 and oil on the plug cap. my guess is ive had a leak for a while, the oil has blown onto no3 plug and cap then down onto the fins and has collected dirt.
    Leak persists.

    Rear crank seal???

  15. Actually im probably back here and this is the right answer. Ideally id like it stripped and rebuilt with new seals/gaskets throughout. No way am I doing that.

    Why not?
    Gasket set.
    Weekend.
    Job done.
I just let mine leak where it does, I could do what I'm suggesting you do and it still leak from somewhere, or start to leak after a month or two. As long as it doesn't splatter up the back or cause smoke to come out of the hot air vents, I live with it.

  17. I really couldnt face it tbh. If the rain abates tomos im going to whip the weber off and clean it all up. slap the dells on and see how that goes. Hopefully well and will make me feel better! Lost me snail - flow meter - bugger!!!

It wouldn't fit on your Dells anyway... and it's so much better if you have 2 of them.

  19. Sounds like fan hub oil seal to me... or possibly the oil pressure switch...
