No end float.....?

  1. I'm sure it's a daft question, but why would you need 3 shims as opposed to two (or four), as long as the end float is correct?

  2. 3 shims is The Rulz, as decreed by VW. I assume it's to do with getting proper lubrication when the clutch is down, pressing hard on the flywheel. I surprised it works at all, but it does.

  3. It'll be oil and frictional co-efficient between the rotating surfaces, mostly for when the clutch is down.... will stop the drag trying to spin the thrust bearing!!

One to drag against the bearing, one to drag against the flywheel and one to float freely between being dragged evenly in each direction.

  5. Cheers, it makes sense once you know .

  6. Hence I believe. you should never start your bus with the clutch down after being left for a long period ????

  7. Did I mention hat I found the third shim? It was stuck to the thick shim all along!

  8. Never start it with clutch pressed down

    The owner’s manual states:
    Winter starting of Manual Transmission
On manual transmission, also depress the clutch pedal when starting so that the starter only has to crank the engine.

  10. And they're quite right. I'd doubt having the clutch down would wreck the shims.

i'm surprised the really thin ones don't crumple like a Ferrero Rocher wrapper every time you stomp on the clutch, but they don't. It's a miracle...
