I've just bought this engine, advertised as a 1700. I've just checked the engine code and it AP. After looking this up, it seems its an 1800. Just wondering, could it have had 1700 B&P's put on it, for some reason? Or is a 1700 more desirable than the 1800, so they told a little porky?
i "think" the case and internals can be swapped 1700/1800 but not 2 litre? so it's possible, one of the clevererererer chaps will know more though, what plans do you have then? prob's with yours?
Mines fine. Just wanted a T4 to have a play with and learn a bit. Just wondered why the confusion in sizes. Cheers rick.
Ask the boy, he'll tell you. Lol. Is that a t25 engine? I also suspect 1700 and 1800 internals can be swapped
Its really hard to be sure as loads of things re interchangeable. I bought a van with a 2 litre type 4 engine only to discover its really an 1800 (even says 2 litre on the V5). Its got late heads on though so I needed 79 type exchangers to fit even though the engine is an AW from 1974 or so. Mine is all sorted but my guess would be that yours really is an 1800 and the PO didn't know what he was selling. 1700 B&P are hard to come by so why would anyone fit those to an 1800 Crankcase? I would have thought an 1800 is an improvement on a 1700 after all and if you were going to all that bother wouldn't you build it to a 2 litre?
There's a lot of babbling going on here To clarify... All type 4 cases, can be built into a 1.7/1.8/2l 1.7/1.8 have the same stroke crank and the same length rods, just the B&Ps and heads are different 1.8 and 2l have the same bore heads, so can be swapped from engine to engine, valve sizes are different, as can the exhaust ports be different (some 2l came with square port exhaust heads) There are a few variants between engines, but tell me what you want to know, and I'll do my best to help
