New loom 'HOW TO' on The Late Bay??

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by salad.dodger2, Sep 9, 2014.

  1. I have been using the search function, also Google but cannot seem to find a 'How To' on fitting a new loom!?

Is there a link to a thread or website that can help?

    Thanks

  2. @1973daisey did this and should be able advise

  3. Is this a pre-made loom??

  4. if you've bought a pre-made loom then it's a relatively simple task to remove the old and replace with new......if you're making up your own, then rather than buying just what you need, buy bags of terminals, rolls of cable and spiral wrap, so you can lead out any cables easily. once in situ, you can then heat shrink the whole shooting match.
The heat shrink terminals are excellent, but I did most of mine in proper crimp-ons with protectors....
for what they cost, I'd just buy a ready-made....

to make your own (essentially).....take off your old loom, split the wrapping carefully with a stanley blade measure the lengths of each cable and note the colour (you'll struggle to find some of the original colour combinations) measure the terminals and duplicate.....takes a few hours, if that

NB// making some of the cable runs longer than necessary, just in case, isn't adviseable IMO, unless you intend to re route

  5. This would be a loom bought from a proper company. I still have mine to take out.

Guess, I am wanting to know how easy is it to take out and replace. How do I know what terminals do what?

Not great with electrics but not stupid either haha

  6. i think Peter at Volksgoods makes full looms....worth giving him a bell...very helpful chap:thumbsup:

taking out the old loom is a case of disconnecting the terminals at the fuse box end and gently (!) pulling out the cabling in manageable sections....you'll soon find another cable leading elsewhere, so trace it back and disconnect.....don't rely on making a mental note of how things are routed...take pics...better still do some drawings with side notes....
It's not as daunting a task as you imagine....and very satisfying to know that once installed, many niggling problems will no longer occur:thumbsup:

  7. Cheers. The state of mine now is awful, cut about over the years to the point its too much of a worry to even consider using.

Do I need to drop the engine and box??

  8. no....

  9. OK thanks dude. I'll take notes and pictures, help me a long.

If anyone has a thread or link to follow that would still be cool. :)

  10. I put up a 'how to' for making a loom

fitting a pre-made one is simple.

Start by getting the correct wiring diagram for your van (in colour), then follow the diagram to re-connect it all up using the colours as a guide.

take pics of yours and make notes before you take it out to help you putting the new one in
