Nasty noise from under the cab floor whilst driving

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by orangeena, Aug 31, 2011.

  1. Hello,
I was on my way to a car boot on Monday with the bus loaded, but not excessively.
About 100 yards from home we took a left hand bend at low speed when a dreadfull 'boing/clonk' combination noise rang out from under the drivers side floor.
I am also convinced I felt a jolt in the floor.

I have had a look but there is nothing obvious I can see. Does anyone have any idea what might have gone?

She had just been MOT'd & serviced and the brakes had been 'tightened', so could it be something to do with that?

I carried on the journey, albeit gingerely and made it there and back.

    Cheers

Sounds like the anti roll bar may have snapped. You may not be able to see anything because it could have returned to its normal resting place - grab it and give it a tug from each side.

  3. Good call. That would make perfect sense. I will get oily at lunchtime.

  4. did the noise happen just once or does it happen constantly?

Well I saw the title and clicked on it with my funny answer about a pedestrian caught underneath and found out I'm too late you've already suggested cats and dogs.

  8. Stupidly obvious but check your wheel nuts.

Going to bug jam I got a shock, bang thud, rattle. Sounded like a drive shaft had fallen out. Turns out tge wheel nuts were loose. :doh

  9. Now I am really scared!

No living creature was hurt in the making of this noise!

I only had the noise once, but it was quite loud. Even the missus noticed it and she thinks cars run by magic.

Complete shot in the dark but check your speedo cable and the mechanism box it sit in.

  11. Cries of 'We are not worthy!' in the direction of HorTs as I have just been down to the garage and he is spot on.

The roll bar has snapped off at the point where it enters its supporting bracket although strangely on the passenger side. All the noise seemed to come from the drivers side.

This is what it looks like in situ

Here I have displaced it a little by pulling on it (phnar!)

And finaly this is a close up of the break. As you can see it seems to have been cracked part of the way through for some time.

    Karma delivered to the man.

So how much is one of these then? And is it simple to change? And is it dangerous to drive in this state?

    Well done HorTs.

I wouldn't drive with it like that.

It will cost about £40 in parts. Can be a bugger of a job but simple enough.

No probs driving without one, lots of people don't have one. No high speed cornering :) .

I'm inclined to say replace all the bushes related to the roll bar if you've got to take it off. Over time those bushes get softer and softer.

  18. I need my food. And I am tight, so the budget model will do for me. The idea of high speed cornering in the old girl is funny in itself.
I will get the fixing kit from Heritage and the anti roll bar from JK then.
Thanks for all the great advice guys, and virtualy in real-time as well.

I guess I would do well to get some penetrating fluid on those rusty bolts a.s.a.p then.

    Cheers

  19. Hello again. I can get both the anti toll bar and the pair of fixing kits from a company called Machine7 (http://www.machine7.com/)
Are they an OK supplier only I have not used them before.

    Cheers
