My poorly 1979 bay

  1. Is that it's final resting place? If so what's going down the side nearest the front seat?
I'm liking this build. It's nice to see how other people are dealing with the back of a converted van.

  2. Can I ask a dumb question? What wood are you using, as I'm about to have a go at a unit myself, and that looks nice.

  3. Because my cab seats spin around I wanted to leave enough space for my fee, also I want to give the appearance of space so yes it is in its final resting place except it is going up on a two inch plinth to make it look like it is floating! Each side of the unit will be ply cards that will have same trim as rest of van, ivory with a peppermint strip! [IMG]
Hopefully fitting the unit and work surface tonight so will post piccies later:)

  4. Thanks
I using ash laminate over MDF. I was told to use laminate over solid ash cos the laminate will flex with the van movement whereas solid ash wouldent and would start to come loose after a while :)
I have just used about three coats of clear marine varnish, 1st coat thin with about 25% white spirit, it raises the grain :)

Have you decided how you're going to stop your wine glass doing a runner on that supper slippery table?

  11. You matching the top of your unit with that table? The darker strips I mean?
Looks really good and the location of the table makes more sense now :)

  12. Velcro............
    On my hand!

  13. We hope to but may not be able to because of exposing the grain on the end! May try and finish the edge closest to the table with a strip of ash to protect the edge :)

With regards to the table position, ideally I wanted everything symmetrical but it is impossible as the unit can't sit in the centre of the panel on the side of the van because of the space needed to put the bed down so we have ended up purposely not lining anything up so hopefully will camouflage the fact that the unit isn't central!
So the table is 60mm offset from the unit but will line up with the work surface which will also be offset from the unit :)

  14. Finished fitting the table into bottom of roof box, well pleased.

Those tall thin cupboards - what are they for Andy?

  16. Ultimately they will have drawers that will slide out from the units and will have condiments, cutlery plates etc :)
