My Bay won't start! Please read!

  1. I drive people. As a guide/driver. I do rent it out for others to drive too but I do a lot of research first and make sure they're responsible. I also insist on co driving them and training them so to speak for an hour before they take it away. I prefer to be the driver though! It earns a bit of money, and let's me afford to keep my Bay :)

My dad's a Scot and he did about 100 munro's when he was a lad, he was up any mountain like a goat. If we ever went out walking when we were camping as kids - up a mountain it was. I remember Skiddaw particulary - clouds, couldn't see a thing and we were only nippers, I was about 7.
Are we nearly at the top?
    Yes, it's just there, look.
    Trudge to next horizon...
I'm surprised he didn't put us right off. lol

  4. I just want to post in this thread, so in years to come, I can say....

    "I was there!"

    :0)

Seriously, get yourself the john muir book, "how to keep your volkswagen alive"....its a great read and you'll learn things without realising it. I rebuilt a 1700 engine from a box of bits, with no previous knowledge and certainly no interwebs, by reading a book. My copy is now well thumbed, with oily marks everywhere, but it still gets dragged out from time to time!

  10. Not yet, but I am confident in this garage man! He's made a beautiful job on other classic vehicles and can diagnose problems very easily (known from past dealings). I've come to the decision though that I'll have to sell a few of my guitars to fund my repair bill - not an easy decision but I want things done well and if it does need a new engine I want to be prepared with cash.

  11. Woah! Neddy! a FEW of your guitars? Wait to see what the man says first I don't think you will need a new engine. I am no expert but reading what people have said on here it really will be something simple. I am afraid "the mechanic" has filled your poor head to bursting with fear & dread. Have a re- read the guys on here really know what they are talking about - some who posted restore & repair bays for a living. In my experience of old cars & engines (not bays) if it turns over but doesn't start it is usually electrical/fuel/air mixture controlled by the carb (the thing that puts petrol into the combustion chamber) where fuel is ignited by the spark from the distributor via the ht leads. When the engine turns over it spins the dizzy giving you the necessary spark, thats why clive & the rest of the guys were saying " take off a ht lead, hold it close to the bodywork & turn over the engine, then you can see if is sparking. The carb sucks air through the air filter to keep it clean & at the same time allows a certain ammount of fuel into the combustion chamber, this is why it is important to be set up correctly! I may be totally wrong of course! Please don't panic & start selling off your treasured possessions

  12. Just so I can be prepared, for the most extreme diagnosis, can anyone tell me where I can get a replacement engine for me Bay? I hope it doesn't come to that but I want to be able to get it bought quickly after diagnosis so want to have a look first!

Do I need to get an exact replacement or will any engine which a site such as Just Kampers says will fit a Bay fit my Bay?
My engine is a 2ltr engine, could I put in a 1600 or would it need to be a 2ltr again?
What would you suggest, could anyone give me links to Amy good sites?
I'm seeing most commonly Verge engines and Turnkey engines, what is the difference, which is best?

You might think I'm jumping the gun which I hopefully am but I want to be prepared!

  13. I am panicking a wee bit but I want to prepare for all eventualities. I get a diagnosis today hopefully though so will wait until after I get it bafore selling anything!

  14. Calm down dear! Please can someone tell Darren it won't be as bad as he is imagining!

  15. One of my mechanics told me he was having the van towed and tried to jump it. It then popped and smoke came out of the exhaust! I never knew about this. He told me it might have wrecked the engine.

  16. Which mechanic is this the new one or the old disreputable one?

Loads of threads on here about new engines but I wouldn't even look into it yet if I was you. There's a lot to consider and it'll do your head in.
