  1. Found this piccy online which seems to show where they've masked.

  4. It is rather tasty. :)

Got the rear valance as smooth as i can be bothered with now.

One of the rear wings is ready for paint now too:

Not too bad seeing as it started off like this:

Came off this sad looking wee beasty.

  6. The GTV is.
    I think the 1200 was on a K plate.

  7. Finally managed to get across to our house today to be greeted by loads of microblisters on all the primer i'd sanded. :(
    [IMG]
I was planning on sanding it then getting the topcoat on the next day but it didn't happen and my heater in the garage blew its fuse at some point in the past couple of days when the weather has been all wet and drizzly here.
Looks like i'll have to sand it all off, buy more primer and thinners and start again from scratch. About a month or so's work and a big wodge of cash down the drain.

Don't know at the moment whether i can be bothered to do it again to be honest.

  8. ye will ye will ye will

  9. Ordered some more thinners and 2.5L of primer as the outside of the shell and bits i didn't sand are still OK.
Its still £30 of materials i could have done without buying again as it could have been spent on new hinge pins for rebuilding the doors. :(
The bits i did in my father inlaws garage are still fine as his garage is attached to the house so stays nicely warm.

He's gonna complaing about all the panels standing up in every space in there though.
Plus their washing machine and hoover both went pop in the past few days while they were away.

  10. you could use a spring pin 30 pence compress with vise grips hammer in to enter ,release clamp hammer in it springs into hole

  11. I thought about that. Modern cars use them so no reason why they shouldn't work on an old bug. Much cheaper than £8 a pin the vw places want.

Got back home today as Frans hospital appointment in Blackpool this afternoon was cancelled. Luckily we were just setting off this morning when they phoned.
Whacked the heating on in the garage and after an hour or so it looks like this.

    The same bit yesterday:

Speaker grill is getting an 80mm rev counter fitted in it (when i find one) so masked it up ready to cut out the hole once i lay my hands on my dremels cutting discs.

  12. The interior, dashboard and the underbonnet area were all sanded again to get rid of the microblisters then given another 3 coats of primer.

Opened the new paint to find it was lime green which was a shock.
After a couple of minutes thoroughly stiring it it looked like this.

  13. Shot a coat on the outside of the engine lid to see what it would look like:
Did the outside of the bonnet too to keep the damp out.

Gave the rear valance 4 coats.

Inside of the bonnet only got 3 as its not getting colour sanded as its pretty pointless.

3 coats inside the engine lid too for the same reason.

  14. Gave the engine bay 3 coats as most of its hidden behind the sound deadening anyway:
Managed to spraypaint my face in the process of doing the vents under the rear window which was fun.

Bonnet hinges got a few coats:

so did the rear light housings:

and the number plate light and other small bits:

Because there was still a bit of paint left in the pot i shot some on the inner arches to see what it would look like shiny.

Pretty pleased with hows its gone so far as theres virtually no orange peel and only 2 runs, one on the inside of the engine lid and one on the underside of the bonnet as i lost concentration a little. :)

  15. Looking really good  credit to you.
What set up are you using to spray?

  16. Cheers. I'm pretty happy for my first attempt at spraying topcoat.
I'm using this old Apollo spraymaster i borrowed off a mate in our VW club.
Dead easy to set up as theres only a volume control on it, and creates virtually no overspray so you can still see across the garage once you've sprayed something. ;)

I'm hoping to maybe get the interior, dash and under bonnet sanded tomorow ready for some more green.

that colour suits a beetle, I hope it looks great when its all done!

  20. I think it could be a while before its all back together as theres not enough room in the garage to fit the wings and still have space to work around it. :(
Still need to repair the bottom of one of the doors and find some better hinges as the bit that attaches to the car is seriously worn.
