Music in my van

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by physiopro, Feb 21, 2014.

  1. I know there are already quite a few threads on hear for in van entertainment but I would just appreciate people's view on this idea and potential pitfalls!
I am potentially looking at Pure Highway H260DBi head for the dash and Q acoustic bt3 speakers, a pair in the back! That's it!! Head and my iPhone with all my music can bluetooth into the speakers so no wires. Have been to shop and listened to my iPhone through the speakers via bluetooth and they are awesome! Potential problem is if the 240v from a cheap inverter gonna be enough to run the speakers?

Technical spec on the speakers is
Hidden within the Q-BT3 speakers is a high quality, 2 x 50 Watts per channel amplifier, a Bluetooth V4.0 wireless receiver (with advanced ‘aptX’ capability for improved sound quality), and a low distortion Digital to Analogue Converter (DAC), accessed via an optical input.

For movie lovers wishing to hear ultra-low frequency effects, there’s a separate subwoofer output to connect your subwoofer of choice. A second line level input allows you to connect a CD, DVD, Blu-ray player or any other ‘line level’ source.

"A brilliant audio solution for nearly every requirement"

Thanks for any help and opinions:)

  2. We used to rent out PAs large and small, at the studios I worked in....Wi Fi PA's were just beginning to surface at the time and TBH they were nothing but trouble....same with radio mics....we were forever fixing them, so unless stipulated, we always hired traditional speakons, multicores and leads....more hassle for the Techs..... few, if any, issues.
Bear in mind this was a good few years back, and the technology has come on in leaps and bounds since then.

Personally, I'm old school when it comes to car audio.... CDs that you actually put into a slot...can you believe it?:D
I can see the virtue in bluetooth audio, but until such time as it's the 'norm' for in car entertainment, I'd always go with good components, good cabling and good connectors.

Don't let this put you off....see if you can find any reviews of wireless car audio installs and draw your own conclusions.

The power inverter query is simply a matter of knowing the required current demand of the unit (s) and choosing an inverter with suitable output....

  3. Bluetooth is the norm for incar entertainment now. However, as streaming the music from your iPod/iPhone etc will kill the battery you have to have it plugged in, so using Bluetooth is pretty meaningless when you may as well haut plug straight into the head unit or the car USB
    :)

  4. Thanks for that. To be honest I have been in to a couple of specialist hi fi places and they are raving about these speakers! They sounded amazing when I listened to them. I have also looked at various reviews on both the speakers and head unit and they repeatedly come top of the list! I particularly like the problem of accessing all my music being solved and being able to access DAB easily in a good quality system :)

  5. As in wireless speakers?

  6. Bluetooth's good when camping though. You have control of your music while you're not in the van.

My head unit isn't a BT one, so I bought a USB bluetooth adapter from eBay for four whole pounds. Just a dongle that plugs into the USB slot in the stereo. Works perfectly.

  7. Oh, I've read the original post now. No, I mean most car stereos either after market or factory have Bluetooth. Didn't realise the op meant to use something you'd normally use in the home. Sounds like it would be a lot if faff?
    :)

  8. If it works, it's a great idea though....no cable routing.

  9. As the speakers are blue tooth it means we can use any audio source with blue tooth capability straight to the speakers so no drop in quality! I have USB ports available at the front of the van :)

  10. The only cabling will be between the speakers and power to the speakers!

  11. The technology's definitely improved recently....
years ago, I made a 'remote' for the TV, for my old fella, as a bit of a joke.....it consisted of a six foot long piece of dowelling, with a ferrule on the end....

suffice to say, he never lost it....:D

  12. I have recently put a CD player and 4 speakers into my 74 Westy as it was never fitted with a stereo, I opted for a Apline CDE-177BT head unit with comes with Parrot hands free, V-Tuner internet radio, Bluetooth, memory stick can be plugged in, I pod - MP3 can be plugged in or fed via Bluetooth. CD player normal radio and much more.
I also got 2 Morrel Maximo coax 6.5 inch in the front and 2 Morrel Maximo 6 inch in the back no sub (as yet!) and no amp and I can tell you this.... I AM BLOODY IMPRESSED WITH THE SOUND!!!

It depends on where you live but Auto Audio (Park Royal in West London) done it all, they aren't the cheapest as the are one of the best car audio places in the country and also one of the first, but I will tell you this the done an amazing job they colour coded my front speaker grilles to my seats and the rear speaker rims to my interior trim (photos attached) they also fitted my glove box lid free of charge and my fresh air vent linkage at the front wasn't working and they done that for me free of charge too!

They normally do mostly work on Aston's, Porsche's, Ferrari's etc... But the owner said that quite a few of the fellas who work there are into Air Cooled VWs and loved to work them!

I really can't recommend them enough oh yeah by the way the owner called Greg owns a beautiful Baywindow and it's interior - stereo and gadgets in it are amazing!

  13. One potential issue would be interference from a cheap inverter....don't take anyone's anecdotal evidence as gospel...get in touch with the manufacturer, tell them exactly what you're planning and see what they say....if they can't say categorically, find someone who can.....cheap modified sine wave inverters can be had for as little as £30, but if it f*cks up your signal, it's neither use nor ornament.....

    maybe ask an electronics guru....

@physiopro are you sure that the head unit will talk to the speakers? The Bluetooth is for connecting the head unit to a phone etc as are speakers. Both units are used for receiving signal and amplifying and playing them, not sending them!

I recently installed a Kenwood KDC-BT73DAB head unit it is very very good.
It also comes with the dab aerial which not all stereos do.

Search for my thread it has some photos.

  18. Thanks for that! To be honest no I am not! I just presumed it meant I could pair them but maybe not! Will look at your thread, thanks :)

My last post seems to have gone missing. I couldn't find my posts so I went searching it.
It is on the "new what have you done to your bay today thread, page 169.

I would post a link but I'm on a phone and a technical FW

I also fixed the 2 speaker/4 speaker Bluetooth playing! :)

Yes - there would be a problem with the Bluetooth - you can only pair with one thing at a time, either the head unit or the Bluetooth speakers. You can not stream to both at the same time.

All you need is a Bluetooth/USB/iPod/MP3CD capable head unit and as you need to run cabling around the place you might as well feed audio to the normal speakers instead of mains power to the Bluetooth speakers.

Alternatively fit a retro car radio to the dash and hide a 12 volt Bluetooth head unit setup somewhere.

If you need music on the move then you need power more than quality .... My Sony £100 head unit MEX3900 4x50 watt with a 200 watt sub woofer amp can drown out the distressing sounds of bits falling off the bus without winding up to full volume.

While stationary you can hear the music without the noise and then the quality counts.
