  1. I'm going to learn about the van electrics and I need to buy a multimeter.
I've looked on line & some look pretty pricy.
Block & Quayle sell one at £10.49
Will that do everything I need it for?

  3. yes it will, just need something that will measure around 12 volts and show continuity, don't know who b&q is as i am writing from Australia, but go for it at that price

  4. Looks good:thumbsup: I got one off eBay for about a fiver. In the How to section in Mech Tech on here there's an excellent in depth guide on how to use one, makes it all clear and simple. Sorry I can't post a link I'm on my phone but it's easy to find and well worth reading.

  9. If you can get an automotive one it'd be better- They're a bit pricier but you get points dwell and RPM thrown in- Points dwell is invaluable IMO, it makes a huge difference in how well my car runs.

  10. whs but also invest in a small test lamp you can make your own for a small cost, great useful tool if you need to find a short circuit or even fitted between coil and dizzy to check the real moment when the points open when timing

  11. Motorcycle indicators work great for this- small, bright & rugged.

  12. Cool will have a look around . Just looking for something cheap & cheerful to get me started as I'm on a budget.

Spotted the £5 one on eBay will look at the spec. Handy to have I guess. Rpm reader would be handy too

  13. Either that or maplins.

As long as it reads 12v and has a buzzer on it that will do.

The buzzer is invaluable for checking continuity in cables.

  14. If it's just for your van, about any one will do. You're just going to be measuring volts, sometimes amps and ohms for continuity. You don't need anything fancy.

  16. Avo is still the dogs bits for meters!!

Mine's an autoranging digital unit...

  17. I used a bulb ,if it's bright then 12v ,if it's dim ,then less than 12v...

  18. Is it in Black and White?

  19. Digital? That's new-fangled! I used to have an old Avo 8. Nothing more satisfying than the "clack" of the circuit-breaker when you set it to the wrong range :).

Megger insulation testers were very popular with South American police forces, I'm told...
