Last week @Millie suggested we go out for a little drive one evening. Little did I know she had packed the car with all the camping stuff and passports. Got to Dover and I still hadn't twigged. The penny finally dropped when we pulled into the port... we were going camping in France! On the ferry Millie informed she hadn't booked anywhere, the sat nav didn't work, the printer had run out of ink so we had no route to follow but we had some old maps. Arrived in Calais about 3.30am so decided to keep driving west along the coast until it was daylight and could find an open campsite. Stopped for a little rest after being up for 24 hours. Found a lovely campsite near Cabourg right by the beach. But on top of a cliff... we won't try climbing down that in flip flops again. With temperatures soaring I needed to keep cool.
Millie gave me a new little friend. Had some refreshing swims in the sea, and lots of relaxing on the beach. We filled up on gourmet French cuisine. Met some French people that were proudly displaying their Willys. This is the moment when a bit of planning i.e. breakdown cover, would have come in handy when we got a hole in the oil sump. Managed to get to one garage where we got shouted at in French to get off his forecourt because we were dripping oil everywhere. Limped along to another one and luckily despite them not speaking a word of English we managed with school boy French and a few games of charades to get the car on the ramp and le bodge underway. A holiday's not a holiday without getting lost. So thank you to Millie for such an amazing surprise and can we make sure we have some safeguards in place before our next adventure.
The best way to travel just book the ferry and leave the rest to fate you will always find somewhere to camp, We stayed on a municipal camp site last Friday went for a walk early in the morning there must have been 10 cars in the car park with people sleeping in them as they left it to late to get in, Steve,
Thanks guys she's blooming lovely It was a great time, we went for 4 days and I now look like the singing detective in places it was so hot. (The beetle has had a strop though and the engine seized last night, pants)
Wow, she properly treats you like a princess, you're so lucky!!! What a fantastic surprise, keep hold of that one
Nice to see some adventurous spirits and some nice pics too. Her ladyships surprises are usually nasty ones so definitely a keeper.
