Major oil blow

  1. Just started my engine in the van after 3 years of a rebuild.

I had the engine working on the bench fine.

Got it in the van, started it fine the oil blow out the new screw on oil filter I have installed... Any ideas?

Major oil blow not just a little bit.

Do you think it wasn't tight enough? Or air in the system?

God this van is starting to do my head in

  2. Make sure you've got the oil lines the right way round on the filter head (feed/return)

If the oil filter has a pressure relief valve in it, it won't allow the oil to flow if it's wrong!!

  3. I don't think I can get it the wrong way?!?....

The oil filter adaptor can only be installed one way. I have installed a thermostatic plate but I don't think that could effect it?

It really blow the oil down, so hard it hit the floor and sprayed the under side of the engine

  4. It's one of these adapters... ImageUploadedByTapatalk1429468526.319273.jpg

  5. With a sandwich thermostat takeoff to an oil cooler

  6. Does that fit with the engine support bar??

  7. No... You have to grind off one of the fixing points... But will hopefully be worth it, if I can get the bloody thing going

Perhaps your filter doesn't have a pressure relief valve at all. I fitted one like that by mistake once and it unscrewed itself a bit and blew the seal out. If you fitted a standard T4 filter for instance I don't think they have pressure relief.

  9. So is it better to have a pressure relief valve?

When I looked inside the filter after I was expecting to see a empty cylinder with holes, but it was triangular shaped like it had push into the centre

  10. Do you think I plumbed it incorrectly on the sandwich plate?

  11. I'd try a different filter...

  12. I've just been reading... I think it's a stuck pressure relief valve

Can also just be cold thick oil, a too-big oil pump i.e. > 26mm and a rubbish filter - I remember reading on the Samba of somebody managing to blow out the seal on a full flow filter with 20W/50 oil.

  14. some cheap imported copied mocal thermostatic plates have the wrong markings for the inlet/outlet of the oil flow.
where did you get yours from just to be sure it isn't plumbed the wrong way round....

  15. @zed warned me about this when he fitted my full flow system . I went to pick the van up and there was a puddle of oil under the filter - the first one had blown the seal !
He fitted a different filter and the jobs a good `un .
I can get you the code if like ?

    :hattip:

  16. I have just brought a new fram ph8a with the extra protection.

I was wondering if it could have been the oil should I run different oil now?

  17. My oil plate is meant to be a mocal purchased from EBay - so it has to be real....

Can you actually plumb them the wrong way? I still can't see how?

  18. i looked at the fram filters and some people didn't rate them that highly, so like zed went down local parts place and ended up with a filter that cost £5 and fits most vw passat/jetta etc and works just fine
