262mm for the hydraulic cam, 271mm for non-hydraulic. Pull one of the cam followers to see what you have. Non-hydraulic pushrod with hydraulic cam followers would not be good.

  8. No unlike type 1 engines you can get these out with head on and case unsplit . just remove the pushrod tube and a magnet on a stick should pull these out . What is the engine code out of interest ? I would pull a few not just the broken ones to make sure they are all the same .Same goes for the pushrods

On top by the breather but if it is a refurbished engine the numbers may have been removed – mine are. There is another number on the fan housing but that could have been changed from one engine to another.

  11. I remember seeing a number on the fan housing, its either CE or EC one of which I think relates to a 1700 of the 72/73 era, which tallies up with the 73 date of the bus. Not quite the 2000cc it was sold as. But like you say it could have been changed over

I'll have a check around that breather tonight, do I have to take the tin ware off to get at it?

GE code type 4 engines are from the 76> models, 2 litre's - ours has one, its got the FI system and also the catalytic converter smog stuff fitted. The GE's are only produced 76 to 79 (some with solid lifter heads, some with hydraulic) they then went on into the Vanagon's (Type 25?)

The Tom Wilson book has all the info in good detail!

  14. This is getting confusing now,

    Is FI fuel injection?
My engine has twin carbs, with a mechanical fuel pump, with a vac dizzy
is there any other defining features other than the engine no that would tell me what it actually is?

    FI is fuel injection!

    EC is correct for a 1974 1700cc motor - look here ;D

    http://www.type2.com/

scrool down to library on the left, there is a section (middle screen) from A to Z, look for engine codes!

It appears that the fan housing is from a 1700 engine and could be the original (does the number match the V5c?) but even if you find the engine code it will tell you what the engine was, not necessarily what the engine is. An original 1700 could have been rebuilt as 1800 or 2lt and the only way to tell is to strip the engine and do some measuring.
