My apologies. The mark I was talking about was the tdc mark! I'll adjust and see how it goes. Just wasn't expecting the tdc mark to be where it was that was all.
Yes to fitting the ignitor changing the timing by a mile. Just re-time it correctly and you should never have to set it again.
Any mark before TDC will be to the right of the TDC mark, as the crank (and pulley) rotates clockwise viewed from the rear. If it's before TDC, the timing mark must pass the joint in the crankcase before the TDC mark, as it's....well, before TDC. Time the engine statically with a light bulb to get it going. Setting the idle advance with a gun is just confusing and doesn't have much meaning.
If it's so far out it won't start, get an assistant to turn it over while you strobe and turn the dizzy. When you get it near it'll start and you can fine tune it.
Got it timed and all running well now. Made the round trip to my parents (just under 400 miles and no issues!). Did a valve adjustment there and all ticking over nicely. I was around your neck of the woods Zed, we visited Ely and found a cool dub advert in the antiques shop there.
Result! I assume you mean Waterside Antiques? We had a stall in there for a few years, only for fun, and just about broke even...
That's the one. Went there many years ago with my parents (grew up in March) but guess I only appreciate it now.
You grew up in March? With all those extra fingers, maintenance on your van will be a doddle! ( My Mrs is a Ramsey lass so I know what Im talking about )
And I finally got around to doing a comp test. Don't have a super accurate one but all cylinders were up around 120 psi so I'm a very happy chap! Now just to figure out why the engine occassionally cuts out when stopping at roundabouts/junctions. Don't think it's the timing/idle setting as it idles absolutely fine. Any thoughts?
