Loose Head Bolts 2lt Type 4 motor

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Fat_Brum, Oct 10, 2016.

  1. Ellie May past MOT with flying colours today ............though it was discovered that the head bolts are loose on one side, has been a little bit jucie the last few runs and a little hesitent when cold, this a 2lt type 4

Garage says its an engine out job!?!? ............and best to to check both sides...... both side check sounds logical.

    Any thoughts?

Oh and said it will be OK to keep running!

  2. How did they know the bolts were loose?

  3. Said they thought the exhaust was blowing and found it was the head blowing whilst looking for the exhaust leak................did not ask exactly how they know it was head bolts

  4. I see. Not a very technical diagnosis then! But that said if they do this stuff all day every day.....

  5. They have been in business since 1986, so some time, though never a bad thing to get a second opinion, especially with all the experience you guys have.
Having a bit of a search using Mr Google, it does look like it is an engine out job to reach the top bolts.

So if engine is out, what else is worth checking?

Do you need the engine out for head bolts?

But to tighten em up surely engine stays in save yourself a few hours labour.

  10. You need the top tin lifting away so its fiddley, carbs off, manifolds etc. Spose it wouldnt be a bad idea to remove the rear bearer bolts and gearbox top mountings and hinge it down to do it but never done this. Still think its easier with ngine out. Especially if its at a garage Ive swapped heads with the motor in but i had my reasons at the time.

  11. It depends if it still has the original head gaskets that may have gone ? If so tightening wont help !

If it takes an hour to remove the engine at worst it'll probably speed up the actual job by that much easy and you can look at other stuff whilst it's out so on balance probably advisable even if you're paying someone else to do it !

  13. Thanks guys:)
Well looks like its best as an out job, as other stuff can also be done when its out.
Though only 4 bolt , its not a job for me, garage job, with clutch and gearbox nose cone to be inspected??

    Recomend any one?

I hear Hayling Island is a nice location for this type of work!

  14. So the garage that spotted the proble, said it will be OK to run for a short period, until sorted, you Guys and Gals have any view on this?

you can do the torqueing with the motor in, its not easy though.

    Rocker covers off
    Rocker assembly off
    Carb/inlet manifold off
    Top cylinder tinware off

Its far quicker to drop the motor as Dunc said, plus you can investigate other stuff whilst your at it

  17. Plus one for out... could be head gaskets if they're there.. in which case prob best whip em out pop some spacers at the bottom of the cylinders as vw recommended....and bobs your aunties live in lover! Get it back in quick before you find something else to fix.....
