If you have an insurance policy without Salvage Retention and Agreed Value then you will have to fight.

With an Agreed Value you are insuring your van for an amunt that you and the insurer considers valid. So my van I bought for £6250, spent at least £30k on restoration work welding amd maintenance over 8 years has an Agreed Value of £12k.

Without an agreed value you have to retrospectively agree on what it was worth. Which is harder.

Salvage retention means that if I am allowed to keep the bus (not category A or category B writeoffs so damaged that tjhese must be crushed..) then I will end up with the bus in my posession.

    Good luck .

  2. Best bet will be to do as @bernjb56 says his son did , get as much info/ evidence as you can as what it’s worth now ,, And fight for it as market value as it was before he ran into you . They have to have figures to work to to do the right off anyway . Shame you don’t have agreed valuation but market value is really the way to go. If they give you a low valuation then I’d fight it and sue for your loses if it’s no fault . Get yourself checked out proper at hospital too ASAP . Your health is more important as little things can get worse . Good luck bud , tell them you don’t want to get stress from the claim right from the beginning .

That’s not strictly true, there’s no reason for it to not go back on the road legally, It’s just a paperwork exercise

That’s reasonably bad damage, I can fix it, it won’t be cheap, the earlier vans crumple easier as they don’t have the Y shaped chassis and the more substantial wheel arches and deformation panel, all these things create your crash protection zone on a late bay. I could quote it but I’m near Portsmouth which is a good way from you, don’t pick someone just because they happen to be close, it’s a specialist job on any vehicle and with an older one comes other complications, I have done insurance repairs before, look on my Facebook page for an indication of what is possible

  6. Cat A and B can't go back on the road so would never be allowed even on a Q plate.

They can actually, insurance was the main problem, when it’s written off if the ID is removed then when presented for a Q plating the DVLA issue a new , not category chassis number , it’s all just a paperwork exercise just need to know which pages need filling in

If you DO end up needing attention to your own bodywork as well as the bus, let me know as I'm in Whetstone for three days or so pretty much every fortnight at the moment ... (I'm known as the Cotswold Backwhisperer ;))
You could have a TLB freebie of an assessment at very least, as it may be that you have to get a course of treatment somewhere, and that should be paid by the other party .... Another reason to get things on record by going to A&E.
Whiplash type injuries can take a while to show themselves, so having an early report from someone who's seen similar across thirty years would stand you in good stead ... Not back in Whetstone until around the 18th now I'm afraid ......

  11. That’s a gutter. Hope you are okay. Just to give you a glimmer of hope, when I had a works vehicle written off in a no fault accident the insurance company couldn’t have been more helpful. They called me with a list of about ten vehicles which they had found on autotrader and at dealers. They gave me the links to them and asked to to have look at them and let them know if they were comparable to what I’d had lost. To be fair they were. They then asked me if I’d done any extra stuff to the van like sign writing, racking, extra electric in the back etc. I had. So they agreed extra money to go some way to redoing that stuff in the replacement. In the end to be honest I pretty much ended up with a vechile very similar to what I’d had but with actually slightly less mileage. My vehicle was destroyed so the option to buy it back wasn’t viable.

Good luck and get yourself checked out. You’ll be sore tomorrow. I was for weeks afterwards.

@DrNinjamonkey hope you’re ok. At least you didn’t end up wearing the front panel!

Good luck with insurance and keeping your van.

I think it was a class A but it was a tidy split so he had it repaired.

  17. Your looking at a new bus I'm afraid, I had a much smaller bump in my T25.

I was totally fine, just cheesed off more than owt

Front left corner damaged bumper, front panel, grill, radiator and windscreen. To me looked easily fixable but they wrote it off as a cat C so I got full agreed value payout of 8000, I did get salvage retention it was £126 to buy back. I sold the bus for parts for 1500.

Each insurer is different but I'd expect the worst and if they will pay for repairs happy days

    Ps glad your okay

  18. if you look at where the van was hit the previous welding on the van just poped , not to well welded , so don t use them

  19. If you need advice on the valuation it may be worth talking to Clem on the early-bay forum. He does valuations for the agreed value on insurance policies so may help
