  9. I'd say much better than a normal car, and much better than front wheel drive in particular.

I drove home from Essex into SE London on Sunday as the heavy snow was coming down. Had to go through Chidelhurst. Didn't think about the hills!! Well, the traffic just stopped moving at the mini roundabout on the common so I started to take a shortcut. Oh dear. Really steep hill down. Had to crawl down about 2 MPH. Had to be really gentle on the brake to stop locking the wheels. Maybe not so good to be 2.5 tons downhill. Loads of FWD cars were just sliding to the side of the cambered road, front wheels spinning and the back tyres sliding into the kerb. Up hill was a doddle. Normal cars the wheels were just spinning not going anywhere. I overtook about 2 cars and just motored up the hill slowly. Was followed by a defender. He had no probs either!!

  10. I must say that for the 20 minute hair raising drive I tool mine on in the 5 inches of snow we had it was sacry to say the least.

    straigh line, fine!
    cornering, useless!
    stopping, pointless!

I'm used to driving landrovers (series 3's and defenders) the bay pickup was quite un nerving sitting on top of the front wheels, sailing into corners at 2 miles an hour with front wheels that had less effect than a pair of shopping trolley wheels. I was not a fan. took the pickup home and walked :D

heres mine in 2010 i think, all the fuss about rwd being bad in the snow is just scaremongering, they are fine when you set them up as was intended by BMW etc. Bavarian Motor Company should be a clue, they are made to work there!!

We have 2 bmw coupe's fitted the with all weather tyres, they are both fine in the snow, alot is also down to driving style/ability. They could both better with full on winter tyres, as is law to have fitted in southern germany, and many other parts of europe, but for the few days of snow we normally have, and storing all the sets when not in use, this is a good compromise.

  14. There are so many different conditions presented by snow its so easy to make sweeping comments. Todays frozen - powdery surface was no problem at all in my main driver which is a Ford C Max. Friday night - I was permanently struggling for traction - heavy car (diesel lump) on low profiles (standard). Went out in the wifes Saxo - absolutely fine, loads of traction, stopped, steered - wasnt spinning up. Went out in the van too (which is the point of this post) had no preoblems at all.

Its a number of years since my bus has been my daily but I have driven it in snow quite a bit over the years and found, in most instances it was absolutely fine. Never been stuck in snow but have been bogged down in mud a few times. There isnt one rule of driving when conditions are changeable and not always easy to feel whats right. I used to look with distain at folk who got stuck where I didnt but If you dont regularly drive in abnormal conditions then it takes a bit of getting used to even if you are experienced.

Anyway - overall rating of my vehicles - C-Max- 4, Saxo - 8, Bus - 10 (cos not only did it cope - I enjoyed it!)
