Hi, just purchased some Berlin laminate edge for my Westfalia. I’m guessing this stuff isn’t the iron-on stuff, so I would expect to use contact adhesive. Does this sound correct?

Also the laminate is a few mm thicker then needed. So here would I steel rule and Stanley knife it before sticking in place. Or do you stick in in place and then trim off the excess?

  2. Sorry can’t answer your query, but can you tell me where to get Berlin edging? I’ve got some panels with the wrong stuff on.

The way to trim laminate "back in the day" was to get an approximate ( quite accurate) fit and plane the surplus off at a 45 degree angle.
I vaguely remember a small palm held plane that had an overgrown razor blade in it.
A standard plane or sandpaper around a wooden block may work.

NLA VW parts eBay. See picture, I’m assuming this is a Berlin match. Too dark to see in the garage at moment! 50D21B4E-FC0A-41EA-91E8-AC588779F826.png

Guessing you haven't got a laminate trimmer.
Get it as close to size as you can before fitting, follow the contact adhesive instructions fully, then file off the edge.
Be careful with the file not to pull the laminate off.

Yep, I kind of remember that as a kid in the 70s!

  9. As someone who did this for a living.
Glue both sides and let it dry and I mean dry.
Stick it on then gentle tapping with a block of wood or a firm push
Trim it with a lam trimmer .
    File a nice bevel.

If no trimmer use a 12deg block plane to take the edge down to size
If no plane use a good file. It's a good idea to tape the area your filing down to with masking tape
