  1. Ok, Thnaks

    Who sells good parts then?

When you take them off , if it's obvious that they are dry then grease the visible UJ on the end ...to save undoing it to grease the rear , dismantling and all that .
You could get one of those multi purpose grease cartridges that fit on a mastic gun , undo the clip that holds the gaiter on the shaft and push the nozzle inside the gaiter and pump the grease in .
I know some have done that whilst there in situ , but not as good though .

Thanks again for the pointers. I need to investigate much further before deciding which way I will go.

I've wiggled the driveshafts about a bit to spread around any remaining grease. I hope to get it up on ramps tomorrow for a proper inspection

@paulcalf , I used a lolly stick to get the grease into the joints. I did it in-situ & as @Faust says it's not ideal but TBH I didn't have ready access to new parts & therefore didn't want to inspect the joints too much in case I saw something I didn't need to see! If you do decide to have a go without complete removal, loosely cable-tie the axles up so you don't loose them to the dirt when you've removed the bolts.
You may have seen the pics I posted in the Chip thread the other day?

  5. I did see your thread, I thought you changed the entire CV joint.

Luckily I'm not on a trip anywhere, so gives me time to come up with a plan and a proper solution.

    Thanks everyone

LOL, no I do carry a spare:rolleyes: but in that situation I just re-greased all 4.

  7. I looked at the quality the overall cost ,against the messiest job going and i was very happy i did it my way in the end , they were very good vw audi quality ones at the time and although dubious of the boot material at the time ,which are like none ive seen sold seperately they have been brilliant , tough as old boots:). All good 5 years on  No taking apart just squirt in extra grease supplied fit wheel end tuck up over top and fit gearbox end . took about 2hrs if that.

  8. Nice one. Who did you get yours from and did you do both sides?

  9. yeh both sides , i think it was jk at the time but i think others do them ??

  10. I'm in the same situation at the moment, and if it's any help you can get all 4 CV joints complete with new boots from Eurocarparts for £96 incl vat. They are cheap Q-drive ones but may be ok. Use the promo code EASTER20 for 20% off. I'm just going to repack mine with grease first though as I'm tight fisted!

  11. I followed rickyroos advice and the knocking has stopped.

When I saw the mechanic and described the noise, he said he doubted it was the CV joints as they wouldn't knock as loud as I was describing.

I told him the noise stopped when I pulled it out of gear and he said it definitely can't be the CV joints then!

He wants me to bring it back in next time the knocking happens!

I still think it is the CV joints, but what do you properly knowledgeable people think?

The noise was horrendous and really loud, but intermittent. It has now stopped since I wiggled the driveshafts, but I haven't been up or down any steep hills or done any really tight bends!

The noise wasn't like a tapping, it was like a loud banging at regular intervals

paulcalf, the noise is horrendous for dry CV's.
I think your instinct is correct but you'll see when you separate them. I recall Zed saying to Clive Neilands at the time that the reason the noise can come and go is the load on & off the joints as you accelerate/decelerate

  13. Thanks I'm glad to hear that from someone else who has experienced horrendous noise.

This mechanic must not have heard one as bad as mine!

I think my mate is going to help me remove mine and rebuild them. The entire driveshaft replacement units may be a simpler switch, but it is much more expensive and I'm wary of the quality of them.

so you saying the noise goes when freewheeling with it out of gear if so the cv joints would still be doing their thing so he maybe right

    ..you'd have thought matty.
I seriously thought it was the clutch/gearbox breaking up. The noise is indescribable & does come & go with load. We were driving slightly up-hill, it started. Turned round, same thing. Downhill, round a bend coasting with clutch in, it stopped! Figure that?

  16. lucky for me the same has happened to theBusmonkey though so it isn't just me/my bus that is weird!

What else could a v loud intermittent noise be?

It's a CV. Usually the wheel ends dry up first, it's the heat from the brakes.

  18. Cheers @zedders. You still haven't pointed me in the direction of some proper quality CV joints...which I assume means they aren't readily available!

I'm on my phone, it's a pain hunting for stuff. Don't vw heritage stock decent ones?
