Knock Knock. Who's there? CV joint probably! Advice please

  1. Sorry @Dylan i can't help. Ring the people you bought them off? or it is probably covered in rickyroos thread which is linked on page 1 of this thread

  2. Yes I am going to call them in the morning. From the research I've done this weekend it looks like there IS a correct way they are supposed to be fitted, but no one seems to know if it actually matters! I suspect it doesn't matter as long as you can get the dished washer and the circlip on ok, but I will check and report back when I've spoken to someone. I have driven Doris since the install and there were no odd noises or wheels locking up!

  3. Did mine yonks ago. Didnt pay any attention to which way round they went from memory. Been fine. Also i didnt fit the spacer as this was discontinued at some point anyway

  4. The tech department said it shouldn't matter which way round it's fitted. They did say that the groove is where the boot fits in theory, which is different to what a lot of other people are saying. I'm going to leave mine as they are, which are fitted as per Sean Bartnik's page below. Only difference being I used the concave washer. I've had enough of thinking about CV joints!

  5. "I've" done a quick sketch which may help those of you who are less technical than I am!

  6. Thanks for the diagram - that does look like a handy book to have. The only issue I have is that on the CV joint I have (like the attached photo) the groove on the outside is on the opposite side to the raised bit in the centre.

I have installed mine as per the John Muir sketch with the groove to the side of the boot, but I'm pretty sure the raised bit in the centre was against the circlip.

  7. CV joints done
No knocking on the way home.
It was straight forward enough, but still took ages and I had engineer friends doing the hard stuff!

No internet so I had to ask @zedders by text ' Should I fit the dished washer onto the drive shaft', his answer was spot on: 'If they are easy to fit, fit them, if not don't'.

They wouldn't fit, so i didn't fit them!

All 4 cv joints had loads of movement, so changed them all for new german made GKN Lobro kits. (GSF).

Credit to you people who can do these jobs easily in a few hours!

  11. Good luck with the cv joints!

My partner is a teacher so we are going at half term, which is just after the festival.

I'm more of a rum man, but i'll see if I can acquire a taste for whiskey, seeing as we are in one of the finest whiskey locations in the world.

I'd rather be driving the beast to the Caribbean, but we only have a week!
