Engine is now all together and in. All plumbed in, up and running....... Problem is it runs terrible! I think my 49cc Mobylette scooter could out run it . It sounds noisy (maybe because I've got used to the sound of a mates stock 1600 with stock exhaust). To my (untrained) ear it just sounds a bit 'clattery', maybe check the valve clearance's as I assume these could be affecting the timing as well? The carbs have had rebuild kits fitted from eurocarb but are still jetted as I got them, apparently for a 2.0l, but who knows? It doesn't rev particularly cleanly and pops and bangs with a bit of smoke, very very rich. Timing has been set at 5 degree's static. I've attached a photo, as the engine at least looks lovely . We have a place very near to us that specialise in setting up carbs so I want to trailer it to them and get it running better so I can at least drive it over to the rolling road session I have booked for the 22nd. I am frightened to drive it incase I wash the engine with it running so rich! Engine is a 'w' code (& has the right heads & pistons), twin 40's, breather box for heads, sgl quiet pack exhaust. Can someone (probably Paul) give me a list of the right size carb parts (jets-mains & idle etc) that I ought to be putting in to suit this set up? At this point I don't care if I had to pay for super-duper mega expensive platinum bits as long as it made the car work! We are going to v-dub Island in a month and I have 2 little girls that are desperate to camp in their bus. Going in the T4 with a tent just wont be the same. It also seems to have sprung a leak from the oil pump. Is this likely to be the pump or just a gasket that hasn't seated right? Can't say I'm over chuffed as the engine was supposed to be a nice fresh long block. Can the pump be removed/refitted/sealed with the engine in situ or do I have to take it out again. Attached a pic below so everyone have a look and tell me if it looks right/wrong.
Easier for me to tell you what you need to change, if you give me a list of what you have in there so: chokes idle jets main jet emulsion tube air correction jet The popping and banging - where is that coming from? Carbs or exhaust?
Thanks Paul, I have absolutely no idea what is inside them and the noise seems to be coming from the exhaust rather than the carbs.
Had a chat with Paul, put my mind at rest & he has helped me immensely with his advice to getting the van running properly. Updates will follow when I've got my new parts ready to fit in the carbs! Once again a massive 'Thank You' Much appreciated and beers are on me when (not if) Imake it to the same show!
