I've wasted a load of money buying jacks & stands that are just too small for the job. Now looking at the SGS set as mentioned above. They seem great value and well designed. http://www.sgs-engineering.com/garage-equipment/axle-stands/tj3x-js-3-ton-trolley-jack-axle-stands
That's what we use on type 1 and type 4's. get the van up on car ramps first, axle stands under the rear torsion tube for safety. Jacks to support the motor then lower onto the ATV lift and away!
The SGS 6-tonners (3 tons each) are excellent: well made with a wide base and big circular feet. At full stretch, they're actually too high.
Sorry @mikedjames & @Moons this wasn't meant to be a serious post. Its a jack my mate had just bought when i saw this thread. No fork lift needed to lift t into the van, just two people at each end! SGS jacks and stands look good for serious requirements
My experience is jack up and support high enough to undo everything and pull engine off gesrbox then jack higher to remove engine then do the reverse as if it's too high it can make it a real pain to get the engine back on gearbox due to the angle of the engine compared to the angle of the gear box. If that makes sense . Once engine back in the engine bay lower van a bit so the gearbox is more square with the engine and will go on straight rather that trying to get it on at an angle.
