Hi Been lurking again but now time for a post So I'm starting to do more work on the van and I'm thinking about buying a jack and stands Now mine is a Tin top so I think weighs just over 2 tonnes Is that right? If so then each corner would've ok one a 1 tonne axle stand and I could lift either end on a 2 tonne jack Am I wrong? Also what height do I need to lift the rear by to get a 1600 std engine out Thanks Al
Mahoosively high. I go as high as my Jack will, then on the axle stands and it's still not enough to slide the engine out easily. I can just do it by tipping the engine back as I wriggle it out.
Or ramps. If you haven't bought them - for the sake of a couple of quid buy the ones that extend highest with the widest base would be my advice: http://www.sgs-engineering.com/garage-equipment/axle-stands

Im no expert on type 1s but when ive done it in the past its been on the floor onto a ply board. jack van up and slide it out on the ply board.
^this. Jack it up enough for ease of working, lower the engine, then jack a bit more to slide it out.
I did mine recently and dropped the engine, then lifted the back.... I think. Can't remember how high but I had a 3 ton Jack and 3 ton stands. @snotty had a link recently to some really solid looking stands for not much money if memory serves.....
@Baysearcher is giving it a go tomorrow - so let's all crowd around the crystal set and see how he get's along children....
Would I then need two jacks one to lower the engine one for the van Then can I sort of tip it off the jack onto the board
Too big when under the engine. Lift OK for rear suspension tube. I use ramps then I only have to push the back end up a little with the jack without lifting wheels to get the engine slid out on plywood under the valance.
Some people have mentioned using ATV lift for the engine, dammed if I can remember where. Is this a sensible option?
