Hello all, haven't introduced myself yet, it broke before I got the chance......I've got a pickup with issues; it cuts out when warm after about 5 miles. Restarts when cold runs fine then dies again when warm. I've changed: plugs, leads, coil, condenser etc got fuel, no signs of carb icing and have run out of ideas (and breakdown cover) the only ignition component not changed is the coil +ve wire, but can't see that heat cycling? Its a 009 distributor single carb twin port 1600. Any ideas gratefully received intermittent faults are difficult to trace! Regards Jago, in North London
welcome fellow pickup owner. can you get it to idel when it's hot/warm. have you got play in the throttle spindles. before my carbs bit the dust i had to have the idel set rediculously high so that it wouldnt die when you put your foot on the clutch & brake to come to a halt. check the valve clearances too. one of mine had closed up so much that one cylinder wasnt firing at all really....
Thanks for the replies, all mirror what I've been thinking! Fuel tank is breathing ok, this is coil #3 I've tried as it seemed to be classic coil breakdown symptoms. Fiter and carb clear of tank rubbish. My mate who had a beetle is convinced it's carb icing but manifold is warm and the carb is too, would setting fire to the whole thing help?
One more idea is a loose sticky label off a replacement fuel sender has been known to cover the fuel tank outlet. It drifts off when you stop. This needs the gauze filter in the tank to go missing. One of many nuggets of wisdom from T2D boot camp... But this one sounds heat or choke sticking on related . I had a nightmare with my choke because it would jam on because someone had hammered the brass bush on the choke spindle and bent it slightly. Some emery paper and it became free again. Does the exhaust smell of petrol when it dies ? Is there a spark ?
There is a spark, not a label on the sender, I've had that out many times to get the fuel gauge to stop lying to me, but I will check the fuel tank filter when I've got the time. It cuts out when driving its not a stall issue. I agree re condenser but it seems good will attempt a capacitance check on it when I'm feeling strong.....it seems heat related, as I said pointing to an electrical component breaking down with heat? No takers for carb freezing? I've known it happen to bikes in quite moderate temps, I'm quite sceptical as you usually get frost/heavy condensation visible and it all feels warm when it stops.
All better! Gave up and threw a new carb on and all is well......doesn't make sense diagnostically having cleaned out the old one and it being an intermittent problem, but there you go. Now will sit back and wait for various bits of the new carb to fall off/catch on fire etc! Thanks for all the replies, let us never speak of this again Jago
Quite right. Move on to the next problem - it's just around the corner... Glad you sorted in and no help dwelling on exactly why.
