Ive recently bought an iphone docking station and i plan to mount it in the ashtray in the dash. It will be wired up with power and to the cd player aux connection on the back. So basically you slide out the ashtray, put phone in it and it charges and plays music through the stereo! Finished driving then just close the ashtray and it still looks stock. Anybody done this?
Have you looked at a Bluetooth adapter? If you have a phone not iPod it may be more usefull? You don't have to be in the front pressing buttons and any phone with Bluetooth will work. Plus you can download your music without paying Apple.
Matty when its on do you select music on the phone or is it done through the stereo? I connect my phone to my stereo with a cable but choosing what plays is a right faff as its done through the stereo so we tend to leave it on shuffle but it would be nice to easily select tracks or albums to hear.
the head units not ipod/iphone compatable (as i wanted a DAB radio) so i its just connected to the aux in, this means i have to select the music on the ipod/phone For it to charge i ringed up cig lighter socket behind the dash that is fed from the headunits amp out I used a lead like this one but a cheep one http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC748ZM/A/apple-composite-av-cable?fnode=72 and a socket http://store.apple.com/uk/product/H1578ZM/A/griffin-powerjolt-dual-for-ipad,-iphone-and-ipod
our head unit has a lead out the back with an iPod socket on. it does charge the ipod because the old ipod we keep connected and dumped in the glove box wont hold a charge anymore but will work when the head unit is on. it may depend on the wire going to the ipod. ours terminates in a plug which is the same as the charging plug. if the wire has the normal stereo jack plug that won't charge it up
@Colin - It's possible, yes - my USB link to the stereo charges my iPhone. Not all USB links will have enough power, though, but as long as it does and the dock can charge the device away from the van, then it should also charge it in the van
Oh! you didn't just want to know if you could ask the question, you actually wanted the answer as well. Well I've got to go downstairs to get a phone number for someone so I'll have a look in the van at the same time. The bit I don't like about my head unit is that once the ipod is plugged in all the control has to be done on the head unit itself. I'd prefer one where the music selection is done on the ipod/iphone itself.
Cheers bud Will a standard head unit fit straight off? been that long since my last bay I can't remember
OK done that. It's an Alpine CDE 111R if memory serves me we got it in Halfrauds and I don't expect it was too expensive as I'm very tight.
