Internal opening rear hatch.

With all the recent fuss about the opening rear windows and the reminder about how easy it was to make the hatch open from the inside l decided today I'd have a go. And l have to say it really is easy to do.

The Germans kindly designed the rear lock with 2 holes to make this easier. I used 8amp wire and a connector blocks internals. The wire length is 18" l didn't really know what size to do so went for long. having played with it I should have made it 22" as you'll discover later but at the time l really didn't know what l was about to discover :)

Due to the length of wire l discovered l could loop it over the rear hatch catch. This was by pure chance. l didn't want the wire too short because the bedding sits so high up and the cable would be lost and a fiddle to find.

The 18" cable allows for a good open rear hatch. It also "just" holds it on the hatch rear springs before it closes or springs open. A little nudge and the boot is shut. if the cable was 22" it would hold it more on the opening tension.

And due to the length of cable l found a P clip holds it in place and stops it dangling down.

What l need now is something like this:

But that's for next weeks project.

  4. well done. I did mine with garden twine and a twig. Yours looks more 'factory' though.

I did also recently see that someone had done this using an interior front door handle assembly for that proper factory look
    :)

That is true. I've just got to get my hands on a handle and away l go. I have it sussed.

  8. So how do you open the door? just pull the loop?

  12. does anyone have a picture with a location and orientation of the door handle that someone fitted? I have an idea how to make it work, but maybe i failed to see a simpler solution.

  13. Oooooooo i like that 8)

  14. just done this while rekeying that lock, great little mod
I didnt make a hole in the panel/trim I just threaded the wire out under the liner at the bottom so no holes. Instead of using a loop I tied a single length and tied three loops long the length for variable sized openings. I have tucked the end of the cable into the top edge of the liner to keep it tidy and to stop it flapping about.

Having tried it at the VoWo show I was not wrong stating that the cable was a tad too short. A small gruff of a breeze ad it blew the rear hatch down. So I bought a window restrictor and it seems much better. This one is also adjustable but the angle needed toner it onto the first hole is not possible unless I end the stay.

I did however have to make a slight adjustment to my rear hatch To make it avoid the button the stay fits to. That part needs painting.

I've done some more on the internal rear hatch today. All was well and I've had no problems until some ham-fisted baboon broke the wire  It was l suppose a temporary solution now that l have the rear hatch stay. And really is worth doing. l was able to open the hatch and enjoy my morning coffee at Elemental in the sun while still in bed. The perfect Sunday.

So with the internal door handle that Majorhangover Dave gave me (cheers) and some slight persuasion in making it bend and stretch a bit more l was able to line it up to the holes for the rear wood panel preventing more drilling.

Slight bending of a threaded rod for the new pull button.

And now almost done. Couldn't find anything suitable in the workshop apart from my spare door pull from the Ragtop. l think a trip to B&Q is on the cards. I'm looking for a small ball type pull like that from a Beetle heater control.

  17. i was working on making an internal handle, i'd use a VW door handle instead of the daewoo one but i couldn't make it work... couldn't get the leverage on the rod right.. this idea with welding on a piece to divert the cable could just do the job, thanks for the link!

It lasted well but mk2 gave up so while rummaging in the workshop for mk3 (I pulled the nob off mk2) ad looking for a door button rod I found this flexi metal thing that looks like something that once held in a light bulb. Anyway it's on the bus and hopefully it'll last :)
