Just about to order some new ones
These are 6 years old would that be about right or should they last longer
Are the black ones any better ?

  3. I found The Red polypropylene ones last well
I don’t think the black rubber ones last any longer than the pink rubber ones

  4. Day

    Day

    Can I ask
I need to change one as it's split.
    How do I do that?
I've searched the manuals but they don't help with this.

Depends on your exact inlet manifold. Some are fixed to a case bolt which adds a chunk of casting underneath making them more difficult to wriggle around.
If you don't have that sort, by undoing the manifold to head/exhaust heat riser you should be able to remove one end piece then then other without disturbing the alternator. Sometimes this goes easily, sometimes it all gets hooked up and is impossible without more wriggle room. There's only one way to find out. Either way you'll need new manifold/head/heat riser gaskets.

  6. As above
I am going to take engine out
And do oil cooler ones at the same time
As i done that in 2014 and it's given me 6 years trouble free miles

I got stuck with one because the builder hadn't wound the studs into the head far enough but had flippin loctited them! Engine out time. You just never can tell.

  9. Ha ha the one I am doing at the moment the stud is so flipping long the spark plug socket wont even go past it lol

All too common, I used to have a shortened socket to wriggle past those.

    Engine out yesterday
Made some cribs for front wheels
All striped down ready for cleaning old gaskets off today
Hope to have it back in today
Always though one of the oil leaks was behind front pulley
Can now see it’s the oil pump gasket
Best get out and started before wife wakes up :)

Sure you havent pinched them round the back? been there done that...

  18. no not pinched but you made me look
I painted the inlet red but didn't go all the way to the ends to keep a good seal
Sure it will go much faster now
Red ones were on back order so black is all I could find without paying £20 for a £3:50p part
Going to do oil pump gasket today
Always though the leak was front pulley :)
Going to push the boat out today and paint the engine support bar the same colour as the van
    Will put up a photo

  19. What’s the red wire?

Looks like the positive lead of a generic ignition module.

I keep a spare boot in my kit in the bus, but I did once start and test run an engine with duct tape over a blown up boot.(backfired in the inlet manifold, because a rocker arm clip wore out leaving an exhaust valve closed at 3500 rpm..)
