Initial start up-engine priming

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by nickyd, Nov 30, 2012.

  1. So, hoping to fire up the rebuilt engine this weekend. Quick question....

Can I prime it and build oil pressure with the plugs out? Just thought it might be easier on the battery.

    Cheers

  2. I don't know much about this but would've thought if you had it ready to start on its own steam, turning it over by hand a couple of times wouldn't hurt to prime it? :)

I cranked mine over with the plugs out until the oil light went out. Nervous time waiting for it to go out. :)

I turned mine over with no plugs and no rocker arms/pushrods until I got oil pressure. Then popped them back on and started. It's supposed to reduce initial wear on the cam lobes while waiting for oil pressure. Not my idea...it was on the set of instructions from the engine builder. Took it straight up to about 2000rpm and held it there for at least 15 minutes, then let it drop to a tickover. Type 4 btw.

    Good luck.
