Indicators not flashing

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Deefer66, Jun 20, 2020.

  1. In the ever decreasing circle of fault finding (hope its decreasing anyway)..

Would I be right in thinking if hazards are flashing ok the lack of flashing on indicators lies somewhere between the split block and the indicator itself? (Crossosver if it makes a difference)

The white into the relay is made live either by the hazard being switched on via the red always live or via the hazard switch being off and through it via the green, made live on ignition?

There is a fuse on the green wire indicator circuit from ignition switch.
Also check white wire from Hazard switch or wiring going to indicator switch, connector going to indicator switch

  3. There are wiring diagrams galore on the Samba :)

  4. Got plenty of wiring diagrams.. even the grown up ones ..

Fuses all good.. now I found the loose fuel gauge connector which was shorting.

I'll double chech the white wire on ignition, must be ok off the red ignition off as the hazards work ok.. might have missed checking with ignition on.. best get a resistance check on the switches or just try a bypass wire for now to rule the switch out of the problem

  5. If the hazards are working it must be part of switch circuit, but you know that already.

  6. Was just wondering if I missed something .. like why does it go through the hazard switch .. can you take the green straight to the white on the relay and bypass the hazard in off position?

  7. Are they working yet ?

    no :)

  8. My experience is limited to the Bug, I replaced the flasher unit with a more modern pin compatible one. The unit is in two parallel halves, the hazards switch energizes both sides, while the indicator stalk does just one side. I am probably not helping but could the flasher unit be toast on the stalk inputs?

Its one input one output on the flasher relay.

There is a power changeover switch in the hazard switch for fused ignition feed or unfused hazard feed to the relay.

The hazard switch changes the power feed to the relay then on another two switch contacts shorts the left and right turn switches on the stalk.
So in normal operation, there should be 12 volts on the feed to the stalk with ignition on, nothing with it off.
Pull the hazard switch and the feed to the stalk will go to 12 volts, pulsing with the relay.

Its most likely the connections to the indicator switch falling off where goats have been trampling around under the dash.

  10. I need to learn a little more about this electrickery stuff , i can get my head around most things but the only part i understood was the bit about the goats ....

It's when you leave both doors open in a camp field ...i had sheep come storming through didn't do any damage ...but goats it's there horns catching the wiring underneath the dash .

  12. Well switch ok assuming 2k for resistance is a good switch position

    No circuit made on flash

But..looks I loose something on the ignition circuit..

  13. 2k resistance for the switch sounds high to me, that won't draw more than 6milliAmps at 12v, is this switch across the relay's coil?

  14. I think he was referring to the meter range...

  15. Ah ok, as you were. My misunderstanding.

  16. Not sure what you're measuring on the ignition circuit?

  17. The volts appearing on the blue or black &green & white that share a line to the indicator.

Think it normally goes to 12v with ignition on until you connect it to a bulb.. . But I could be getting right mixed up now!

The output from the flasher relay sits at 12 volts until you load it with a light bulb or two drawing about 4 amps or all 4 bulbs for hazards . Then it starts pulsing.

  19. Had a combination going on I think.. the bulbs on the dash were not contacting so lost the feed that makes it 12v, otherwise it sits at 6.5? then the led bulbs didnt draw enough to make it flash... even though just two bulbs make it flash via the hazard it didn't on the indicator!, swapping one out for a bulb on each side got them all flashing

Have you recently fitted leds bulbs
