icing

  1. right fitted new fuel pump check filter clean carb jets and idle valve and bus runs ok for a while but slow down at junctions or stop and it starts to splutter and won t idle (it doesn't do it all the time) then it's a bugger to start. The only thing i can think of now is carb icing

so what are my option do i source an oil bath air filter or can i leave my pancake type filter on and fit something to help ????

i'm going away on friday morning so need to get it sorted

  2. i have an empi header unit fitted and the pre heat pipes touch it and have got a worn could this be the problem

  3. The header could be the issue, especially if the pre-heats on the header haven't been drilled!! ;)

  4. I have experienced carb icing, after I bought my Nigerian Bus to the UK. It was not fitted with any carb heating kit, as VW pared everything off the spec. for that market to save themselves a bob or two.
Typically the engine petering out when you come to a junction etc. then appears to be as dead as a door nail.
Just wait a couple of minutes then it starts and is right as rain again....till the next time!!
I obtained the parts (second hand) to modify the set up to european standards for a few quid (in 1989) then no problems.
In winter the VW boxer engine fitted to light aircraft was a Bu@#$r to keep running when throttled back for landing, either trying to cut, (icing) or getting too hot (with a rudimentary carb heat system) which gets over rich pouring black smoke.
The answer is the standard VW air filter system.
