I know it's been covered, but I'm very keen on doing a Scooby conversion. Is that better?

    Can I qualify the heavier clutch - I never noticed on mine that it had changed, admittedly I don't drive it as much as many, but compared to Transits and Vivaro's I've owned it's not worse.

    Compared to some of the performance car's I've owned it's fine - just thought I'd mention it's not unworkable and not as pronounced as the steering for example.

    This ^^^^
    As I've said several times it is barely noticeable.

  3. Ta for that. Like the idea of leaving the gearbox standard and not swapping out the bell housing.

    I didn't touch my chassis for the bell housing to fit but I did for the starter to fit

  5. So good news from both directions as have serious aversion to taking the grinder to the chassis and my post have been about getting some honest feedback from actual users.

    Kev as you did your own RJES conversion, did you connect the front of gearbox to the hanger? Did you make your own engine lower cross brace and if so maybe it allowed the engine to sit a bit lower? There is a smaller starter apparently. I have a slight preference to go the RJES route hence seeking clarification.

    my gear box isn't on a hanger I was told by rich that it wasnt needed on my setup {its been there over 3 years now and im guessing 10000 odd miles}
    the engine surport bar was from rjes

    it may pay you to give rich at rjes a call very helpfully guy and its all his own designs

    I also got a lot of help from the vwkd forum

    Type 25 don't have a mount at the back of the gear box either. So as long as your engine support bar is nice and strong the engine and gearbox assembly is supported fine.

    Only slight word of caution regarding gearbox hanging, it's true the earlies don't have a gear box hanger at the engine end, but both the engine and front gearbox mounts are completely different. On late bays the gearbox hangs at the front on two bolts and a bracket. If the bolts come loose (I myself have lost the complete thing once and I'm not the only one) the main gearbox hanger saves you. Likewise the engine bar depends on it's bolts.

    The earlies front mount is different, about 3 inches of the box part sits on top of the chassis part. If the bolts fell out nothing would happen. The bolts that hold the chassis part of the bracket don't have room to wind out when the box is fitted.
    Likewise the engine bar sits on top of the chassis brackets and again if the bolts fell went missing nothing would happen.

    So, if you have a Subaru engine in a late bay with no intermediate fixings, I'd check your fixings once in a while.

  18. I'm sure the experts will be along soon but I think you will need to get a flywheel and a clutch as well as the auto donor car?
