Though in practice....whatever torque gets you close, while still matching the cotter pin hole up with one of the tessellations on the nut. I'd have said that a little but plus or minus the 'official' magic number doesn't matter too much, but getting the pin really does! In reality, 250 ft lbs is roughly a weight of about 6 stone hanging on the end of a 36" breaker bar...so all you need is said breaker bar and a 12yr old child... P.
I agree , I always think ,can I tighten it up another notch ,when there is no play in the wheel bearing... I have never had a torque wrench ,I feel the force...
I stand on an 18" bar which I once calculated was right give or take. Then bounce round to the next pin position.
What you mustn't do, is go to 250, then BACK to a castlation. Always go tighter. Going back, even a bit, reduces the torque considerably.
Not sure you folks over there can open this or not? Some are down loadable. I printed off a couple for myself & my son, http://www.amescador.nl/documenten/service.pdf http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/type2.php http://www.chrisnet.webd.pl/oko/do_pobrania/vw_manual.pdf
TY for those links...the PDFs will reside handily on my phone BTW...in the light of recent events.. I wonder how accurate this doc actually is ?! P.
I'm waiting for VW to recall my '79 bay to check the emissions. I wonder how much they will take to do the welding...
I have a twisted 3/4" breaker bar that needed 100kg bouncing on 2 metres of pipe to shift the nuts on mine... Which is at least 2000Nm ooerr. and going back OT... There are several emissions control techniques like the smog pump that mixed air with the exhaust and the DVDA vacuum retard distributor that seem to show that VW has been forever passing emissions test with essentially the same engine using techniques that work at idle under test ...and not so well at WOT..
never had a problem tbh, i have a 4 foot 3/4 breaker bar just boil a kettle, pour the boiled water over the nut and undo... i would like to know the torque for in though in nm. I'm anal about torqing stuff up if i don't at work, and something goes wrong it a whole heap of hurt and trouble for me
