hey guys, how hard is it to change the pushrod tube seals? my seals look a bit old and crusty and i have a nice new set.. also the tubes could do with a paint. is it just a case of unbolting the heads, sliding them off and then the tubes will come out? any help much appreciated.
what engine you running? you don't need to take the heads off just the rockers - i've only seen them done on type 4 with hydraulic tappets (mine) and the hardest part was fitting the retaining clips back on the rockers.
there's loads on you tube - here's a random video it may help you understand the layout Pushrod tubes.
oh yeah sorry type 1. 1600 TP. so i dont have to do anything with the valves or anything technical? just unbolt the heads, remove, change seals/paint tubes. put back. ive never taken apart an engine before if you couldnt tell... haha cheers in advance
ive got white ones on there, and new white ones. the ones on there are poking out the side where they have been done up (which is normal) but the protruding seal looks crusty and has small cracks in it. doesn't appear to be any signs of leaks but i thought if i had the seals and the engine was already out i may aswell.. but if its a job for the pro's ill leave it.
yeah, ill keep the seals for when the do leak then. im just hoping i dont put the engine back in then it starts leaking, would be a pain..
Ahh dunno! Do you think its a job that a novice could do zed? Im pretty sure i could whip the rockers off, only about 6 nuts isnt it? But what else is involved?
Undoing some more nuts, cleaning bits and doing nuts back up. You'll need to buy/borrow a torque wrench as well as the feeler guages.
Ive got a torque wrench and feeler guages. Well im gonna give it a go then. Do i buy new pushrods or paint the old ones? So... Rocker covers off, Take off the rockers somehow? Undo the nuts Remove the top end. Then replace the seals and put it all back? And how do you adjust the tappets? Cheers for being patient guys, im a learner
New tubes... and before you fit them you want to stretch out the concertina on the ends a little... this will help the seals to seal
