How to attach Westfalia grill?

I'm trying to get to the bottom of a mystery. My parent's Westfalia Continental camper has a grill attachment for the stove. It was last used circa 1984 after my dad moaned about the pain of washing it up, after which it was retired to the back of the garage where it has languished ever since.

I've been wanting to get the grill working again for a while but cannot for the life of me figure out how to attach it. The trouble is threaded end of the pipe is fixed (crimped on) and therefore it's impossible to screw it onto the threaded outlet in the stove top (which is also fixed). The 'up' pipe and grill assembly are all one so trying to screw it on just means the the top of the grill strikes the lid of the stove.

Are we missing a trick or a part here? Some sort of adapter that goes between the two?

Ah... crumpet toaster. So that's what it's called.

I'm still trying to work out how it attaches though... The photos in that thread show it in place as I'd expect, however without being able to swivel the end fitting of the pipe, it's not possible to mount it into the fitting on the stove.

It's possible to place the grill on the fitting and turn the whole assembly 180 degrees so it's facing out of the camper but even then it's not securely mounted and presumably totally wrong.

  5. With out checking ,the hexagon alloy bit rotates on the bottom of the grill ... yours has probably corroded a bit ... I will double check tomorrow but certain that's how it screws on ...

@lhu1281 you were spot on. That hexagon nut was really corroded in. Thought I was going to break something trying to get it to move but eventually it shifted.

Now my only problem is the garage smells of burnt dust.

    Thank you all

The grill has gone missing but my mother assures me it's been put somewhere safe... I will post hot buttery crumpet action when it's located

It's RHD continental but with speedo in kilometers. We suspect it was due to be exported to down under but never made it.
