How to attach an awning?

Discussion in 'Camper Conversions' started by 66Paul, Aug 7, 2015.

  1. Now I know this seems a bit of a daft question, but not having looked closely at how most awnings are attached to T2's I need your combined wisdom. On the T4 we had previously ,we just used the over the roof straps ( no pop top ). We now have a Westy with pop top & Royal Traveller Awning that came with the van. It has a fabric kador strip but no awning rail on the van. Can it be clamped somehow to the gutter on the bus?
    Any ideas most welcome.

  2. I have a figure of 8 piece Like this. One side hooks onto gutter the other to the awning

  3. You can do the above with the traveller but also theres a tunnel and pole which just drops into the gutter and pair of clamps (watch your paint!)

  4. :thumbsup:Thanks guys. Swampy I have the plastic figure of eight piece however when I tried on the van as in your pic it did not seem secure, maybe I am over thinking it.....

Dicky, I have the tube thought it maybe for something like this but I don't have any clamps. I guess they are just small screw clamps I can buy from a caravan/camping shop? I take your point about the paint - not such an issue ATM very sun bleached tatty paint! However once she's painted I will be gutted if I scratch her. Thanks again.

  5. image.jpg I just used a couple of spring loaded clams for years.

I have two awnings with both types of connection (show off I know). Both seem to work really well.

The clamp type has thick rubber grips so hasn't marked the paint yet.
Make sure any you buy have a rubber liner and you should be ok.

  12. Maybe i could fit in your engine bay

Do you have a lockable hatch or a leisure battery?

  13. They dont clatter against the van like the awning pole does when the wind picks up aswell

No to the lockable hatch. Should I attach the LB to it to deter vagrants??? :)

  15. I would not use the awning at all quickest way to get me & the mrs to the divorce court is trying to put up a tricky awning ... But the woofers have got to sleep somewhere, & six stone of Labrador lying & farting on you is not for me!

i used to use the fig 8 but it annoyed me how if it rained the water dripped through th joints, also on a few windy occasions in skeggy it would blow off, started to use the pole and clamp - it's much better but i have scratched the gutter a bit.

    I'm going through a similar quandary :)

I'm ok with my royal traveller - using the pole and clamp system which has proved solid.

I've just bought a sun canopy for occasional use when we don't need the awning ( like tonight )

It came with some toggles that go through the two eyes on the canopy then it uses sucker cups on the roof of the van which I have reservations about, there's no sewn in section to put a pole through , I'm thinking of adapting a couple of pole clamps to incorporate a hook ( God knows how ) to goo the eyes over but will test the sucker cups tonight...

  19. Have used the figure of eight and the pole and clamp system, the pole and clamp gets my vote. The clamps can be bought from JK about £6 for three and fit them wingnut upwards so it doesnt catch the sliding door. Have also used 3 pieces of bamboo cane and clamps for the sun shade' on the other side' does'nt scratch the paint work and a lot cheaper

  20. Pole and clamp here too. As said make sure you get the little rubber bits to protect the paint on your gutter. I also he the same problem as @rickyrooo1 and got drips coming through the gaps in the figure 8 poles.
