How much oil?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by No CAN bus, Mar 7, 2013.

  1. When I put the recommended 2.5L of oil into what I think is a 1600 TP engine (code AD/AS) the oil only reaches the bottom mark on the dipstick. The dipstick is the correct length (155mm) and the marks are in the right place (16mm and 36mm from the bottom). The dipstick cap fits snugly over the tube and the tube seems OK. The sump is stock. The engine has been standing for a week so is cold and the oil should be in the sump. What could be going on? I've heard overfilling is to be avoided, but then so is underfilling. Any advice would be appreciated.

  2.
  3. 2.5l for type 1
    3.5l for type 4

do have a full flow oil filter??

  4. ^this? You can squeeze 3 litres into a type 1 with no ill effects.

I've always worked on the assumption that the difference between min & max on the dipstick has been about 0.5L which from memory has always been about right..

  6. 0.8l ;)

  7. I haven't noticed an oil filter but that doesn't mean there isn't one. Am I right that the place to look is under the tin below the pulley?

  8. If someone's fitted one, it should be hiding under the tinware somewhere, with hoses running to it.

  9. I'll have a look this evening.

  10. Just a thought, check the dipstick tube is pushed fully into the engine housing. I seem to recall mine working its way out once. (different engine tho.)

An idea might be to do the oil check after a while after inserting a clean dipstick - sometimes if I rush the job the oil seems low.
I think it is because the dipstick tube goes below the oil level and you can push air in with the dipstick which then reads low.

  12. Pbvious Q: you are checking the oil with the van level?

  13. I've found the van has to be really level. Even the slightest of slopes really effects the level on my dipstick. I try and keep mine halfway between the marks. I always check it in the same parking spot! Never more than 2.5 litres though!

  14. Any nose down rake will give you a false reading too!!

  15. I've looked for an oil filter and there isn't one. The van is level but the idea about the pushing the oil out of the dipstick tube is plausible. I've just checked again and the oil level is definitely higher having left the dipstick alone for an hour. Should 2.5 litres take the level to the top mark, or just somewhere in between the two?

Fill it up to the top mark and stop worrying. :)

  17. No can bus dude you need to seal up that hole for the hot air pipe in your tinware if your not using it to feed the airfilter

Leaving it open will allow hot air to enter the cool zone in the engine compartment especially whilst at standstill

  18. Put it like this, the picture u posted. I'd say that's where 2 litres would come up to on my dipstick. 2.5 litres would be at the highest line. Maximum. I'd say I probably put about 2.3 litres in mine to get it halfway between the lines and its done 25000miles like hat so it can't be that wrong!

  19. OK, you've got me, I'm a worrier. I was worried about the hole in the tinware too so I bought an oil bath air cleaner on e-bay to replace the pancake filter. I'll fit it once I have replaced the missing filter stand and then I'll have even more oil to worry about :)

  20. Good on you for getting the stock filter:thumbsup:
You may find you need a piece of tinware that bolts below the cylinders and your pipe to the air filter connects to it
Im pretty sure people call them the stove pipe
