How much damage does driving in snow and on gritted roads cause?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Fronkjunior, Jan 17, 2013.

  1. Do you drive your bus in the snow and on gritted roads? I have to move my bus soon, either to put it in storage for a few weeks or to drive it 120 miles home from resto in a week or 2. My concern is the effect of grit/salt residue on the roads on my lovely newly repaired and painted bus. I don't fancy corrosive spray from the road flinging into nooks and crannies before Iv'e even got started.

Should I just get put on a trailer to storage for now?

Best if driven on salted roads is to wash it down a s soon as so you get the salt off I'd say.

  3. As above, get back and get the hose out. Bit cold at the moment I know but will be worth it in the long run. ;) :smiley_dog_kiss: :smiley_dog_kiss: :smiley_dog_kiss:

  4. Ill be using mine all year round

However mine will be protected with cavity wax and underbody seal with added waxoyl and all the running gear will be painted in tractor enamel
Ill just drive the bus onto a set of ramps and hose the undeneath off with fresh water once in a while

Its not just salt that corrosive animal manure is very corrosive aswelll

  5. Jesus,

Is it just me that finds this thread absurd, sorry to tread on any toes but.. These vans are 40 odd year old, they have been running in all conditions. People have used these as daily cars at some point in their lives. We are talking about one journey of 120 miles, they bus is painted, if you are worried about chips then tape up the front end like all the show cars do. You say its been restored, so I assume its had a decent coat of paint.

Just wash it when you get to the other side, job done.

Sorry, I might sound like a dick but sometimes I think we just take the pee a little

  6. I use mine as a daily and drive in the snow and gritted roads, never bothered washing mine after.

You'll do more damage sliding into a parked car than on a 120 mile journey on salted roads.

  9. A lawn sprinkler placed under your bus and moved around every 5 mins is a good way of washing the salt off without too much messing

Just be aware of where the waters going to run off as you dont want a big patch of ice on the road or pavement

  12. only thing with that is there'll be places under the van that never see the road spray and if you stick a hose under there you could end up spraying it somewhere where it could sit then rot it quicker.

Just get a new bus every 5 years before the rot starts coming through. ::)

  13. Yeah plenty of rot coming through on mine ,but its just an old van I use for camping in :)

Calm down, a question was asked that's all.

Some like to do more in preventive care and some worry about it when it happens.

I is of the second type and then only if its not fixed itself after a month or two.
