How long to warm her up?

  1. 2 minutes from cold - runs on two , then three , then humming on four : 0) She's a beaut! Bit like life really !

  2. Start the engine, get in and drive!

If you're running on less than all four, summut needs looking at...

  3. I get in and drive too, gently for the first few miles. Engine warms up quicker than if you sat their idling for 5 mins to warm up which is better for the engine IMHO
My choke setting is not quite right in the winter, wont idle properly until I've done about a mile. Its OK in the summer and I cant be doing with seasonal choke adjustments so its staying as it is.

  4. You only need to move the choke a few mm its not a major job? Dont use the original markings on the choke etc you need to feel it with your hand or easier pop the airfilter off and look at the butterfly valve at the top

I find a few glasses of wine and a chick flick does the job, usually a couple of hours?

  6. These vehicles were built in the 1970's - Not the 1870's

On a stock vehicle, if it doesent fire up on all four and let you drive off straight away then it needs fixing.

  7. I'd disagree my US spec bus doesn't have chokes and always runs better if had chance to warm up first :D

  8. Put your glasses on - I said stock - Doh!

  9. To reduce wear on the engine, get in and drive. That's what they were designed for. The quicker you get going, the faster the engine'll reach operating temperature. The auto-choke's pretty simplistic - it'll get confused if you let it idle, and wash the bores with fuel.

Turn the key and all cylinders should fire - why wouldn't they? It's not a steam engine. If you're firing on two, something needs fixing, likely just damp on the leads.

  10. ^this.

  11. If she's had a couple of glasses of pinot i can have her warmed up in a few minuets, but if she's not in the mood i do'nt bother trying

  12. In the John Muir book how to keep your VW alive he states doing a warm up will make the engine last a 3rd longer and most engine issues can be avoided my following this procedure - before you all slate me these are John Muirs words not mine :)

  15. I turn the key and drive off. If its running rough there's something wrong.

  16. ^this. Mr Muir was wrong about many things, and slightly mad. Leave it idling with the choke on, and you've got excess petrol washing your bores down. How this makes the engine last longer is a mystery...

Any engine: get in and drive it. The sooner it's reached operating temperature, the better. VW even state this in the owners manual.

  17. Don't get me wrong - if I get her out and run her straight away she's a good one - just sat there on the idle. She's a good one 22m so far and no issues :0)

  18. Has anyone mentioned thermostat yet? Have you got one fitted? The joker I got mine from forgot to fit it- muppet!!
Is it working? Does it expand ? Your flaps all nice and loose? (Stop it now! Wash your dirty minds out) -;-)

  19. perhaps if you hold the flaps open with one hand and the other on the tail pipe she would warm up a bit quicker "works for mine" be prepaired for a kick back
