hot head

  1. Been running and sorting out timing my finished 2l fi t4. It sounds like it's sucking air somewhere. So I checked inlet manifold nuts. 3&4 felt much hotter than 1&2. Any ideas why? Is it because the air is passing over the oil cooler on this side?

  2. No, as the oil cooler doesn't rob or influence the cooling on that side of the engine!!

Is this a recent rebuild? Did you put the "head gaskets" back in, as if you did, this could well be the issue!! They're proper pain for leaking, and they shouldn't be fitted, as even VW deleted them from the engines... unfortunately they still come in the gasket sets!!

  3. Yes I did. I'll compression test tonight to see if that's the case.

  4. do you have to torque the heads down any tighter when deleting these? Just took heads off an engine and one of these was burnt through with gas escaping. So I cleaned up the heads and refit without using these. Refitted the engine, wouldn't start and there was fuel pouring out between pots and heads. Did a quick compression test and there is barely any. Wondering whether I have to torque them down tighter or if the heads have had some dodgy machining in the past.
    :)

  5. If it's burnt them out, then the heads might need refacing!! I always lap the barrels into the head with some fine valve grinding paste, and this will show any low spots in the heads!!

Torque values stay the same!! :)
