Horizontal propane tank

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by physiopro, Apr 18, 2013.

  1. Well I have spent hours trying to find a small (approx 6lt horizontal refillable LPG tank) to fit under the van and feed the propex heater and cooker!

I don't believe there is such a thing! Does anybody have any suggestions please?
    Thanks
    Andy

  2. How big capacity are the westy ones?

  3. ...dumb question coming up.....how do you get the tank refilled?

  4. I think the Westy ones are about nine litres and you fill with autogas at a petrol station. You can buy new o Nes that are a direct replacement at GoWesty in California and I think there are UK equivalents that got mentioned on a thread a while back. You can probably find it with search. I would look but am knackered and need a kip.

  5. Thanks very much guys, I think the tank on the thread is two wide in dia 200mm! I don't mind capacity is 20 lts it is just too physically big! Will search for westy thread
    Thanks again

  6. Whats the maximum size (diameter) you need? I think 200mm is the smallest you can get.:(

  7. Zebedee is right I believe.I looked for ages and only found 200mm upwards.Exchangeable Horizontal bottles are usually for fork lifts etc so are quite large.

  8. I will get measurements of my west underslung tank today if you want

  9. I am beginning to think you are right that 200mm dia is the smallest that are now available, thanks for offer of measurement but I know the westys are 200 mm. I found a website that advertised 6lt bottles which would have been perfect but new legislation means they can sell them any more!

Just didn't want the tank to be visible below the sill or be physically below the forward/aft chassis leg!

  10. I'll put measurements up for future ref.

Here is my westy one, [IMG]

Diameter is about 180mm and length is 560mm.

  11. Thanks a lot, really appreciate your time, there is one for sale on eBay at the moment but is very rusty and not sure I want to chance it :(. Yours isn't for sale is it! ;)

  12. Nope mine is getting g a new valves etc and then getting fitted on my van.

The 20litre one on the gasure website isn't much bigger than mine tbh, plus it will be brand new and ready to go.

Hmm maybe I should sell you mine and then I get a new one...

  13. :) I am liking your style! To be honest I am struggling a little bit with the cost by the time I tot up for the bottle, heater, cooker, fridge etc but really want to do it just once and right so will probably end up buying a new one like you say!
Have you used your van with the cylinder on? How does it look and work? My intention is to plumb into heater and cooker:)

  14. I like the idea of this. Has anyone on here fitted a Gasure bottle?

Is the LPG in petrol stations, Propane or a Propane/ Butane mix or does it vary during the year?

  15. From what I have read the LPG from a filling station is Aldo called autogas, it is a propane butane mix but something like 90% propane so fine for us to use.

Chrisradioman uses it and hasn't mentioned any problems.

I have not used mine yet but will be plumbing I to the greater and cooker as well. Will just use a 2 way gas tap to control what is on and off.

  16. Found this website and I think these tanks look ok, £50.00 cheaper than the other website!

Have looked into cannibalising a nitrox bottle but as you can see from the internal photo above I don't think it is doable, so gonna give these guys a call tomorrow and see what the total cost would be to buy this tank as the other website includes the filler, fixing bracket some braided hose and copper pipe so I suspect you guys are correct and the other option is probably the best!

  17. Not a bad website that, I think you are right though in that it will soon add up to as much as the other place

  18. Autogas.co.uk
Just spoke with these guys, very helpful!
